Ran last week, now it won't run

Post by raidert05 »

Well it ran fine last week every time I started it up last week when I came home from work, leave for the weekend and go to start it up yesterday it turns over sputters a little then dies...no biggie right... so I prime it a couple more times and go to start it up...it just turns over...so here is what i did...

1. made sure choke was setting-yes
2.Gas to fuel filter-yes
3.Gas to carb-yes
4.poured a little gas in the carb still wouldn't run...that was yesterday...

Today
Went to go crank..it fired right up....but back fired pretty loudly out exhaust.. choke set let it idle for about 2 mins, let out on the choke and it ran for about another 5 mins before sputtering out..

Note: If you pump the gas while turning over it will act like it wants to fire up..and its definitely getting gas to the carb you can smell it..

I'm thinking old gas or crud off the bottom of the tank? Ideas? I'm so close to getting this thing on the road full time...after 6 yrs...

On a side note does anyone know of a good exhaust shop in the va beach area?

Check the fuel filter, it may be plugged, or partially plugged. Bad fuel is also very possible.

It's also possible you may have a spark issue.

Weak spark, Fuel filter, or Pump, as in not enough fuel.
I would start with filter.
You can eliminate crud from the tank by running a line into a can and pulling your supply from there.

ignition coil or module may be on the way out. The coil on my Eagle was arcing down the outside yesterday and causing misfire. (same ignition setup as '83 Jeep with 6 cyl) I have an IC12 coil going in (double the output) then I'll seal the terminals with liquid tape.
