Rusty jerry can gas polluted my gas tank :(

Post by shimniok »

I ran out of gas, filled the tank out of a jerry can that apparently had more rust than gasoline in it. It was about 3-4 gal. Shortly after I filled the tank from the pump.

In the last 50 miles I've gone through 4 fuel filters at $4 a pop. Should I just keep throwing filters at this hoping it'll get better soon?

Is there a 15psi-capable cartridge filter system I can do that would be cheaper in the long run?

What else could I do to separate rust and gas? :banghead:

You could put in a sediment filter. Very similar to a fuel filter from a 40 era car. Basically a glass/plastic jar that the fuel flows into with the output up at the top, so heavy things (like rust) fall into the bottom.

Like on an old tractor... ?

Seems like a marine water/fuel separator would do the trick then... hmmm....

Yeah, like on an old Ford 8N tractor.

And yeah a water separator may work fine.

get a napa universal filter holder and marine water/fuel separator with the bottom drain. I stuck a magnet on the bottom of my tank with epoxy.

While the first bit is a good idea, not sure the magnet will do anything for rust. It will keep any metal shavings on the bottom but as rust is not magnetic it won't pull the rust away!

Isn't rust oxidized iron? Magnet should like that just fine.

OK so didn't quite cover it. Yeah some rust is magnetic but some isn't - not sure why I guess the new molecule's structure get's in the way of the iron's magnetism. Either way a magnet won't pick up all rust, but you're right it will probably help

Pure rust is not magnetic, so a lot of it will get past it.

I also used the sending unit access and a speaker magnet on a wire to fish out rust from the tank bottom.

Chunks of rust most likely still have a lot if iron, so a magnet will work for that. Smaller pieces and the dust are more likely to not have any iron left.

Those will go up the pipe if no sock is in the way and get trapped in an added large external filter/water separator before the fuel pump (I did that on my Spirit of the Eagle) I do that anyways to keep from replacing fuel pumps so often. They get chewed up from the crud in the tank getting trapped inside and making like a rock tumbler.
