Cowl drains... Holy smokes

Post by AtlantaDan »

Chasing down all of the bits and bobs that need addressing when a car sits for 12 years. This past weekend, it was "why are my driver's floorpans wet?"

Thanks to the forum, I knew what to check first. I think I found my problem....

Yep. Make sure those holes are clear at the bottom one you get them cleaned out. Then, pull that cowl cover (it comes off easily enough) and get some mesh screen under the grates.

Also worthwhile to inspect under the dash and check that the cowl drain panels were properly caulked.

@Tgreese Is that looking up under the dash or inside the cowl?

Up under the dash. That's the underside of the cowl drain, firewall and and the right kick panel. Air conditioner pulled down (black gummy insulation in forground), looking up at where the antenna wire goes through.

There are a few other places to check after 12 years. Check Inside the boxed section of the frame and above the headliner for mouse nest.
I used to name my FSJ’s after their previous owners, I realized I had too many with five named Rick.

That's under the dash but the caulking inside the cowl isn't any better.

The pan inside my cowl drain (under the air intake grille) also had a small hole that let through water right above the brake pedal. The hole looked like it came from a stray wire weld strike or such. Typical of Jeep's fit and finish in the '70s and '80s.

Seam sealer like this works well to fill small cracks and voids.
