Yep, pretty sure they were “entry level” Jeeps to expand the market with price points “up to 1200 lower than their Wagoneer counterparts” according to expert Jim Allen.
However, the “speciality trim packages/options made the Cherokee comparable to Wagoneers- even going the distance in pricing similar, if not more than the “Custom” Wagoneers of the day”.
Mine is a base model with the bare bones options- no frills. Meaning mine would’ve been priced 1200 lower than it’s Wagoneer counterpart, lol.
I’ve had them all, just never a cherokee NT, so the base model now a days doesn’t mean much to me. I sold off my yellow Cherokee Chief WT last Winter.
The four door Cherokee was put on the market as folks wanted a 4 door base model option, while I don’t know about production numbers, I imagine the production numbers are different for each version of the Cherokee? At any rate, Jim’s book goes into some depth about collectibility, trim options, etc. Check it out if you get the chance.
