The 3 letter limit is there for a reason. Indexing every single word in the entire database is expensive (not in money but in CPU resources). I did just go through and re-index the whole site, and changed the common word parameters. So the search will work better.
thanks for this post- I'm relatively new and been trying to do searches on common repairs, problems and don't want to repeat the age old questions that every new user has.
for instance:
ammeter bypass
fuel pump
big splice
tailgate motor
Should I be adding a "+" or something to keep them together? In doing some of the above searches, I would return results with any variation of "pump" for example. If there is a sticky on this, my apologies.

I just did a search for several of those, and got results using the build in site search. Using a + between them (with no space) should force it to find posts with both words, but not necessarily right next to each other.
If you are using google, using quotes around them (no plus) should result in finding them together.
