Someone rear-ended me and now I'm going through insurance to get my Grand Wagoneer repaired. I've had a couple of estimates that are about $1000 difference.
One estimate (the cheaper one) is suggesting using a mold of an intact rear quarter panel and making up a new panel (from sheet metal?) and fit that to my GW.
The other estimate is suggesting they get a quarter panel from a wrecked GW from jwjeep.com, paint it to match my GW and fit it to the car.
I'm pretty new to all this and quite car illiterate so I'm not sure what would be the best course of action. Any thoughts? What would you do in my situation?
The authentic vibe of my GW would be lost if I was to get a molded one made up right? Re-sale would be less if I went down this route yes?
where is the damage exactly? a hit from the side or in the taillight area ? a taillight/tailgate area hit is pretty bad and expensive to repair. i would find a wrecked one and cut out what you need
where are you located? i have a drivers side panel
I'm in LA. There are panels available at jwjeep.com I just wanted to make sure that a replacement panel from a wrecked GW was the better way to go than a molded one.

First and foremost.... that is an awesome color! I have the same. Second, before you think the rear panel is too expensive, remember you are in the southwest US... call around... Fred from Dirt Every Day uses Sgt Jeep in Rosemont. When a teen side-swiped me, I did the calling because the body shop was only calling local guys and there wasn't alot to be had... and they were quoting 600 bucks for this and 350 for that. Depending upon who you take it to, they aren't going to be looking too hard. From what I was later told, a lot of body shops like the quick in and out insurance work. I like the work the shop did, don't get me wrong, but I saved a crap ton of money by sourcing the parts myself.

Look again. It is buckled up to just under the quarter window along with the tail light corner. I'd call around and find a good quarter panel from a decent source.
Sighs. Look again at his quarter panel vs the replacement from BJ's. The damage in red is much more extensive than what the repop yellow panel will repair.

the upper tailgate is also out of alignement with the Quarter Panel, what a pity. Tricky, tricky to source the wood panelling to match, the wood trim looks salvageable... the bumper looks like it has some scratches as well...

I think BJ's panel would be a good start. The part above it is flat provided it didn't also go into the higher body line. If thats the case, they can fill that gab with flat sheet metal.
Worst case, you use both a donor AND the panel from BJ's, as most donors will have rust down lower anyway.
Just in case their insurance comes back and wants to total the Jeep out, DO NOT LET THEM. Fight to the end.
The other party insurance will always try to lowball your vehicle value, unless both parties have the same insurance company.
Time to estimate your jeep value, which does not have a written rule, KBB or the gold book do not apply, what does is the value of an equivalent replacement vehicle in your geographical area, either the local CL or the completed auctions on ebay is what I used when I was hit while parked. My 85 was not pristine, but I got what I wanted, a fair price and no salvage title... it may take some time, but you have to not give up...
As said above get the full replacement panels from BJs. J&W have bits but seldom in the best shape. I got my fender from CL, there is alway someone parting a good vehicle... do not be surprised that the parts will get a mark up from your selected vendor, in my case it was 20% for the fender, the bumper and the wood panel kit...

They sell brand new quarter panels... get another esitmate or tell the shops you went too that you want the whole panels replaced with a new one and repainted including new tail lights and vinyl stickers ect.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm onto my body shop sounding like I know what I'm talking about now so you've saved me $$ for sure. I'll post pics of my GW when it's been repaired. Cheers
Looks to me like the tailgate isn't completely closed rather than bent.

Tailgate isn't bent to my eye. But, if you look at the OP's pics from imgur, the first one shows the window up. Gap is there too. I really think his whole quarter is badly distorted, which is why I keep saying he probably needs a whole quarter panel replacement from a donor. Not just a repop rust repair panel.

Tailgate is dmged... look at the outline wood trim .. look on the bottom where the two plugs are.. see the bend in thr trim and metal there... the tailgate was damaged as well.
And the entire quarter panel needs replaced not just some jy cut out patch.. its bent all the way up to the pillar. So you need to find a donor panel all the way up to the pillar to fix this.
