I have an in tank. But I hear they mount them on the frame rail. Also wrap an insulator around it for sound deadening because most complain of the sound.
87 Grand Wagoneer Rebuilt 360 by S&J, Fitech GO EFI 600, Novak in-tank fuel pump, Skyjacker Hydro 4" lift, BFG AT KO2 30", Dynamax Muffler, MSD distributor, MSD ignition, Edlebrock perf 4bbl intake, Elgin perf cam, Oil tube mod, Roller rockers, chrome molly lifters, HD alum radiator, Powermaster 150/100 alt, Alum HD water pump, Serhills tailgate harness, Cowl screen mod, Evil Twin grab handles, Rstep's custom AMC door lock knobs, all electrical works.
If you do not have a lift, the rear mounting is tricky, it is hard to access.
I mounted mine between the engine and the TC, seems very close to the exhaust... and yes it is, I tried to mount a shield out of plastic once and it melted... but I have been happy with it. At some point I moved it to the rear area, but the lack of lift forced me to mount it on the cargo floor, and it was so noisy, that after 2 years I moved it back to the initial location, which has the isolator bracket
you can see a bit of the pump on the top right corner, when viewed from under the trans converter housing
more images in my fuel link, but be careful as it is a mix of the 85 and 74
