Vaccum Nightmare 1986 Waggoneer

Post by eraseraj »

Hello All,

I am very new to this network and to owning a Full Sized Jeep Wagoneer. This Jeep is nice all over but the pervious owner made a mess of the vacuum system. Things are missing and broken. I was looking to bypass the mess in the engine but I still want everything to operate as it should. If anyone has a picture of a stock wagon bypass setup they have done themselves I can model mine after yours. I am not looking to keep the canister if I redo the vacuum system. I have replaced 80 percent of the electrical and the only thing holding this awesome wagon from running is a messed up vac system.

Please help :banghead:

Welcome!

Your best bet is to pick up a factory service manual. They don't cost much, and they have the full vacuum diagram for everything on which ever year you have.

The only things that HAVE to have vacuum (if you ignore emissions) is the brake booster, distributer, and the heater flapper. Well, certain years need vacuum for the t-case, trans, or front axle disconnect. But the vast majority of vacuum lines are for emissions.

You can get a variety of TSMs here:

Note: there's no 1986 TSM, but a lot of the other years are real similar.

As Stuka said, you don't need much to actually run. A lot of what you keep depends on what features you want to retain. Are you using the factory air cleaner? If yes, you'll probably want the cold start flap on it to work. Vacuum for the brakes, distributor, heater, etc. The vacuum reservoir (the little globe thing) is really required for the heater controls. Having a good charcoal canister for evap is not a bad thing, either.

Thanks guys for the information and the link to the manuals they are real helpful. I am only 10% mechanic and need all the help I can get to put the old girl back on the road.

I am currently using the factory air cleaner but if I were to switch it out do you have any ideas of what would be a good replacement?

Honestly, the factory air cleaner is pretty good, especially if you keep the cold air tube hooked up. There have been a few others that have grafted on newer style remote air boxes, but typically those come along with the EFI ride.
