Brake pad choices

Post by dodgerammit »

Looking to soon tear into the front brakes of the Radio Flyer. Will do new rotors, pads, hardware, etc. So, I'm a firm believer in just a blank rotor. However, on pads.... What say you?

I run powerstop evolution carbon fiber/ceramic on my T/A. However, this isn't a handling machine. I simply want quiet, solid, and short stops. Repeatedly.

Ceramic? Semi metallic?

Really like these since they include hardware: http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php ... 48&jsn=448

Seems everyone is going towards ceramic now days. Even my cheap ass got them for Walter when I did his brakes. Wasn't much more than the regular or even garbage level at Orileys. They seem to work ok.

Ceramic's offer poorer braking over semi metallic, but produce less dust. That's why everyone is running them now. Less dust equals cleaner wheels. On light vehicles ceramics are fine. I'd stick with a good semi metallic on a FSJ.

Yeah, I am aware that better braking produces more dust. I'm not too worried about fade like I am my other ride. My biggest thing is getting hardware with the pads to do a complete job.

Any recommendations on which work great, and which to avoid?

I buy the cheapest pads I can get. they're not made to last and therefore they will actually stop you.

That is sound logic! Fleet/heavy duty pads are soft! Soft pads also don't eat your rotors as bad. I put a set of semi ceramic on the rear of the family truck and the braking performance SUCKS until they get hot and they have devoured the rotors.

I use the premium semi-metallic from where ever I happen to be. I have 37000 miles since I rebuilt my Cherokee and I am just about to the end of my second set of pads and am on my second set of shoes.
