1986 j-20 engine color

Post by jbaker »

I am resurecting my 1986 Jeep j-20. I think the original color of the engine must have been Bkack. A friend argues that it should be Blue. I like Blue but I want it as original. Can you guys straighten mr out on this?
Thanks

Sorry, all the AMC engines I've ever seen have been dirty grease color.

Black sounds right, I know they went from Blue to Black somewhere in the '80s...Image

My '88 GW had a black AMC V8. It appeared to have been stock and was definitely greasy and leaked like a sieve.

I swapped it out for a 401 that I rattle canned with NAPA AMC Blue. Has a couple of minor leaks already

Yeah, by '86 they were black. Anyone know when they went from blue to black? My '82 has a blue 258 in it, but I was told it was not the original engine.

My '81 has a blue 258, it is original. Not sure when they switched.

The 360 in my '81 J20 was blue and I know it was stock.
...so it must have been sometime after that that went to a black.

I am guessing that AMC must have ran out of the AMC Blue paint at some point and decided that Black was cheaper (custom color verses a stock color)

No guarantee that the 4.2L and the 5.9L were the same colors in the same years...we all know how Jeep was about consistency!

Not that you could tell from the grease/oil/dirt/grime, but my 83 360 was originally black...

Thanks. We all know it won't stay looking like that...haha.

It makes for good engine stand porn...that's about it.
