another broken axel

Post by fulsizjeep »

I am done with 1/2 ton axles and my Jeep will be parked a while. This happened after a vibration at 65, shaft sheared off at the outer seal 70 miles from home after being in Las Cruces a few days. Tried to stick to the plan but could not drive it home. Luna and I are home safe and sound except for the brain damage from the burst of adrenalin. Krista picked us up in Shiprock. Wally will be home tomorrow.

Great Googley Moogley

Holy cow amigo!!!

Isn't this like, the third time you've posted a pic of your broken truck with a spat shaft? I'd say it's high time for a full floater. You've got no shortage of donor metal for that 1/4 panel thankfully.

It needs saying though my friend. I have to tell you that I'm glad you're not dead a little too often. :P

Thanks Matt, Jeff. It is good to be upright and with the living! I have sheet metal to fix it but I feel like pulling the 401, 727 & 208 and crushing the POS.

Are you running a locker in back flint?

Would not be the first twisted shaft I have seen. You could go alloy shafts, which can be up to 40% stronger. More so if you are using 30 year old shafts. But really a 14FF or D70 are what you want for a never break situation. Or a 35 spline D60.

Glad you were safe!

X2
I am glad you had a good time as getting away from it all helps (I know it helps me a huge amount)
I am also relieved that you are not hurt. Big scare doing the 'roll over' event that you were hurt bad. Nobody wants that, ever.
I am sorry that Wally spit that axle out again.
I hope after a while that you will forgive Wally, repair his quarter panel, install some 3/4 ton full floating axles and take him back out to above the treeline for some clean air and mental refreshment.

All silliness aside, I am sure am glad you are okay and here on a Monday to be upset.
Being upset is much better than being injured.

MMMmmmmm BEEF!
While I can not deny the strength and popularity of the GM 14bolt and they common and cheap, I am more a Dana enthusiast.

Dang man! I saw this on FB.

Man I feel kinda responsible for 'peer pressuring' you to do that climb back in 'cruces (the one where the Original Honcho got his green waggy stuck). I know you got on it pretty good to make it up. That may have been a contributing factor to the breakage.....

Lemme know what I can do to help. I have a 220V mig welder and know how to setup a 14bolt.

I think the bottom line is one thing;

Full Float.

Period.

Glad you are ok!

Blake - LOL, I have abused that ole GW for many years. The shaft is just another step in the chain of broken hearts and broken wallets. No need to feel guilty.

Just got a call and Wally is loaded on a trailer for Mancos. Should be here around noon. The bill is astronomically great googley moogley. :o Cash, no check or plastic. :(

Sorry about Wally, but glad it's relatively minor damage and that you're ok.

Blake, Flint's had Wally ever since (before I met him, actually) I "met" him at the original mailing list (it's been a long time!)

Wally is home. I caught up with them after going to the bank for $710 and guided them in to the casa. But first we had smoke bellowing out from under the hood on P2. The AC clutch locked up and burnt up the belts before I could pull over. Line me up for another shot of adrenaline...

How does the saying go?

Can't say I've ever heard that one. At least no ones ever gotten the clap from a D44 though!
