Flywheel questions

Post by JCook5003 »

Guys-

I located a new 258 motor for my J10. It was a crate motor and only had 11k miles on it.

My original 258 was mated to a T-18. The flywheel has scores on it and looks to need resurfacing before I install the new clutch kit and attach it to the new motor. The new motor has a new flywheel on it but it is for a T150 I believe, or possible a T176.

Is there anyway to know if i can reuse this flywheel to save some money on having the other one resurfaced?

Thanks guys.

Should be fine to use the existing flywheel, they were all essentially the same. Make sure your clutch will bolt up and you're good. Even the clutches were all the same really, with only the clutch disk itself being different for different trans input shafts (though some pressure plates had 3 large fingers and some had many smaller fingers).

Just make sure that physically it's the same dimensions as your existing one. Pay special attention to the depth away from the motor and where the ring gear sits as this changed with different starters.

The T5 flywheel I had in my '83 J10 I converted to AW4 was almost the same weight as the one on the 360 from the Honcho (different balance though of course)

The flywheel goes with the engine, not the transmission. The flywheel will be the same no matter what manual transmission is used.

They changed the ring gear in '86/87 for the XJ style starter and they are lighter flywheels as well.
