Do 16's have fitment problems on J20's?

I need some new 8lug wheels and tires for my '74 J20 project.

It currently has some 16.5" wheels.

Do 16" wheels fit 8 lug J trucks ok? Any interference with the brakes?

I'm running 285 16s and they are great. My trucks are '75 & '77. :-bd
Go for it. I also found a deal on a set of Dodge factory takeoffs. $300 for 4-Michilin 245r75/17s. They still had the nubs on them when I got them.

16" wheels will clear fine. Ford's came with 16's on D60 fronts and they have way bigger calipers than a J20. 16.5's were popular back in the 60's to mid 80's. After than they switched to 16's (GM, Dodge, and Ford). GM used 16's all the way up until 2009 on their HD trucks. Ford and Dodge switched to 17's in 2005 and 2004 as I recall to clear larger brakes. Ford rims of course won't fit if they came after 98 due to the metric pattern.

The 16.5 rim is a 16 inch diameter rim with a different bead.
The .5 is the rim designation.
A 16.5 tire will go on the 16 inch rim but will not seat due to the difference in the bead,
hence the warning on the sidewall of the 16 inch tire.

x2, I am running 16" on my F*rd axles on the waggy and the calipers are bigger than the ones when I had my J20.

I bought a set of steelie Ford 16's for my J20 last spring and they work fine. You can't tell the difference in them and I compared them to the original 16.5's that were on my truck and there is a slight(less than 1/8th") difference in the diameter measured at the outside edge of the rim but now I can use any 16" tire I want. Now I just need to get them painted white!

I currently have stock 16x6.5's from my Dad's 78 J20 on my 87, I have a set of ford 16x7's that I will put on after I paint or powdercoat them.
