Ok, so I have a 76 j10 thats been parked for years and the hazard knob on the steering column is broken off. Well I'm trying to get it road worthy, but I cant get the blinkers to work. When I turn the lights on, all of the lights come on and stay solid including the turn signals and side markers. When I flip the blinkers on there is no change. Is this a wiring problem? How would I go about fixing it? Thanks!

Sounds like a bad ground or bad flashers. Switch over to the electronic one. Moisture in the air kills the old school ones over time and the new chinese ones fail FAST!

I'm sorry, but what do you mean "the electric one"? And also, I'm pretty sure part of the Flasher button is still lodged in the steering column so ill eventually have to get it out of the way in order to replace it. Should I just desire the flashers while I'm there?

The flasher is behind the dash or on the fusebox (depending on year. Some had 2 flashers) The modern electronic flasher will work even if only 1 bulb lights up outside, but it will blink at a different speed than the other side to let you know something is up. Ask for an EL-12 at most parts stores. Usually see through plastic case and slightly bigger than the tin/aluminum bi-metal ones.
Your problem could be just the flasher unit itself, that's the most likely other than perhaps the fuse, so check it first thing after you have checked for bad fuses. Usually easiest to put a known good one in.
One of the design features of the old school flasher units was that it would not flash if one of the bulbs were burned out, so you would know something was wrong, and get it fixed. The fact that you get light when you turn the light switch on is normal, you're seeing the parking, tail and marker lights. These are typically in the same bulbs as the turn signals, but are a separate filament.
If a good flasher doesn't get you going, you need to make sure the bulbs are good. While you are doing this, you can also check the connections the bulbs make to their sockets. Bad connections will also cause a failure to flash.
The hazard button is involved also. Hopefully its just a broken button and you can find a replacement. That's a safety inspection failure here and can keep you from getting your registration. That button switches the turn signal lights from being turn signals to being hazard signals (obviously) so if the switch itself is broken you could end up with no turn signals. Most likely unless its somehow stuck between positions its OK and you should get flashing, whether its turn signals or hazards, so you're back to checking fuses, flasher units (there's one for turn signals and one for the hazards), bulbs and connections. Bad or weak ground connections to the bulb sockets will cause failure to flash.
The next possibility is the turn signal switch itself, inside the steering column. They do break. You'll need to pull the steering wheel to get to that, and the hazard switch is probably part of it, or at least connected to it.
Another place to check, especially if you have blown fuses, is wiring for trailer lights.
Here's one for the FSJ Veterns...
Left signal works just fine, but the right one will only work if i slightly pull out the hazard button. I'm assuming I need to replace the hazard switch, but I could use some guidance. I previously owned a Car audio/customizing shop for many years, so I very competent with 12V wiring.
Where can I get a replacement switch and how do I get to the old one to replace it?
Thanks

I see this section has been high jacked, but back to the original question. Would i be correct in saying that the blinkers wont work if the hazard button is jammed? Again, the knob is broken off so i cant tell what position its in. I replaced the flasher unit on the fuse box, but all the lights remain solid when the key is turned, and nothing changes when i flip the turn signal switch

I got some small needle nose pliers and wiggled it. Whatever s left in there doesn't want to move in or out. What now? I'm sure ill have to pull the steering wheel and get down to the switch, but any idea on what to do at that point?
