Huh??? Ruty's lift on an 87 FSJ???

Post by Shuboxlover »

What the heck is going on.

LOOOOOOOOOONG story short.

I am putting a 3.5-4" lift on our 87 FSJ from Rusty's. I started on the rear, got everything removed (finally) and went to put the new springs under it. I started on the left side, got the front bolt started with the blind nut, went to put the rear bolt in and it is almost as if the springs are too short...I have the shackle on the rear of the spring, and no matter how much I pry and pull it doesn't seem like the hole in the spring would even come close to lining up with the frame hole. I measured my stock springs (~57" center-center) and then measured the new springs (~55.5" center-center)

What gives? Did they send me the wrong springs? Am I an idiot?

ALSO.....do I need track bar relocation brackets? If so, why the he!! didn't Rusty's say that on their web site when I ordered the kit??????

Please HELP quick, I am down to one vehicle now and was hoping I could get this done this weekend...

Regards

This is somewhat normal. When the springs have weight on them, they stretch out. What most people do is put a block of wood between the spring eye and body. And then jack the axle up slowly until the two meet and the eye lines up.

Unless you plan on towing, or spend a lot of time on the freeway, I would remove the track bars entirely. If you want to keep them, then yes you need the relocation bracket.

Thanks Stuka!!!!

I do SOME towing with it, and when we do take in to town (~ once a week 60 miles round trip) it is on the freeway, so I think I'll order the track bar relocation brackets. Where is the best place to get them?

I think BJ's Offroad is the best place. Be sure to mention you are a member here. You will get a discount.

Wish I would have seen your last post before I ordered them (and the drop pitman arm) this morning :( Oh Well.....

I got everything installed...the front was easier than the back surprisingly.

4 springs
4 shocks
Steering stabilizer..

now just waiting on the drop pitman arm, and track bar brackets....OH and hopefully a Rhino grille setup if I could ever find one.

Call them. Ryan or Brent will probably refund the difference. Or give you credit or something.

Oh, and where are the photos?

31x10.50's with zero trimming. 32x11.50's if you do a bit of trimmer on the front lower edge of the rear fenders. Basically part of the rocker. They may still rub a little offroad, but should be fine for most things.

But with your stock gears, I really suggest 31x10.50's.

And it looks good!

It looks great. Always felt they should have been that tall from the factory...
X2 on tires, 31"s are a good fit.
Theres a guy on both boards that is doing fiberglass repops of the Rhino grill. Might be your cheapest solution...

Thanks guys....31 x 10.50's it is!!!

As far as the grill stuff goes, We really want one that is stainless (or however they came from the factory) Not that interested in having to paint one. I would pay good money for a nice original one.

Thanks for the compliments guys...
