drum brake parts

Post by ant818 »

1976 Jeep Cherokee chief.
The parking brake strut spring have both disintegrated.
I've spent hours looking for replacements with no luck.
The ones that are supposed to fit are not wide enough to fit over the strut.
Am i doing something wrong?

The spring that goes over the parking brake strut is only there to keep it from rattling. If you can find anything that will work, it should be fine.

Jeep only lists that spring as part of a spring kit for the rear brakes. There is a kit sp. for 74-76, but it is superseded by the kit for '77 on. Jeep PN 8127783, though that won't help.

I looked at the spring kits on RockAuto, and none of them include that spring. That's not surprising, since it does not do anything wrt brake function and it's not supposed to wear out.

I think your only option is to find a used one. If you have a pick-a-part yard locally, you could try looking at the rear brakes on any big GM car - I believe these Jeep brakes are Delco sourced (they are not Bendix, as used in the CJs and earlier Wagons). Or you could ask if someone here (or at IFSJA) has one from a parts car. Or you could try a FSJ Jeep specialty yard like Jake's in the Carolinas.
