Following a FSJ Blood Trail

Post by War Wagon »

Breaking in the new FSJ 5.3 LS swap at the 2013 ECI we encountered a real problem. Check out the photos
on this one.

Never a good sign.

This is the cause of the bleeding:

During a tough hill climb the diff hit the cast Aluminum oil pan and cracked it and we did not know it. The pieces did not break away from the oil pan right away and it did not leak very much. On the ride back to the camp on the rough FS dirt roads the pieces broke away in a very rough section on the road. We were lucky that it was very close to camp when they let go. We did back track and found the pieces that fell off in the road. We never lost oil pressure and the oil level was still on the dip stick when we checked it. When we pulled it up on some ramps we could not believe what we saw. My sons setup is a 78 Cherokee Chief wide trac with a 2 inch body lift and 33X9.50X15's. The bump stops are in place but I guess not long enough. I think with a lift there would be no problems. We saw that the diff was close and tried to flex it out with a jack but that is not like hitting rocks on the trail. So if you have a LS swap and no lift you may want to check the clearance and take it easy on the trails.

Is there a steel pan available? Cast aluminum in many applications is the devils work.

Looks like you need more lift so the axle will clear the engine.

Been busy so no progress on the lift at all. Zack is working on getting his teachers certificate and it is taking up a lot of his time right now.
