First Post! Rod Cap Stud Stuck in Crankshaft

Post by monkbonk »

Just got this here 1979 Jeep Cherokee Chief with a seized engine. PO claimed that the pistons had seized in their bores (while he was driving it)...

Anyways, I removed the oil pan today. Found spun bearings on the rear connecting rods. One of the rod caps was hanging on by one stud and a loose nut. The other stud has jammed itself between the crank and block. I need help figuring out how to remove it.

I'm not planning on using this engine, but I need to un-seize it to avoid having to pull the transmission (automatic).

I cannot jostle it free by rotating the engine back and forth. There's no rotation in the engine whatsoever.

Any ideas?

I would try using a prybar and a hammer and try to get the stud free.

Glad you found us. Image

Loosen the main bearing caps so it can release the pressure.

Thanks
Someone suggested that on another forum I frequent (not FSJ related). I'm going to have to give it a try it.

I'll have to put some pictures up once I get her all washed up.

Yeah, loosening the caps will drop the crank down and should allow you to get it free.

This will be of no real help, but that is a bad day right there.

I've got just about all of the mains loose, aside from the two in the rear (where the stud is stuck). Going to go at it again tomorrow.

I have a line on both a 304 and a 360 motor here locally. I'm going to try to get the 360 running while I do some sort of refresh on the 304. Hopefully, it all works out.

Good to hear. Although it makes me wonder if that crank is still true after being stopped so suddenly.
