Chains fly when whipped or used along with a cable. I saw the top half of a tow truck cab ripped off by the cable flying back

Don't forget to throw you a shirt or floor mat over the middle when winching with a cable.

A shirt? Haha! 
Most all of my wheeling buddies have gone to synthetic rope for safety. I still have cable because I've recovered my rig by winching the axle to the frame, and another buddy's steering box to his frame. Broke it off the frame, and was able to winch it back on to get him off the trail. He actually drove all the way home from Tahoe that way.
Have to be REAL careful with abrasion guards with rope.

Yes Sir, that's why i like my 7/16th wire cable........by the way, the shirt is a last resort....
