Is it normal for the middle of the intake man to be superr hot

Post by candymancan »

Just checking with my thermal probe on my 76 J10.. trying to find where 200f is on the dash gauge so i have reference.. so i marked 200/210/220 etc.

But as i was checking the engine temps. The back is the same as the front. But the middle Of the intake especially by the carb. Was 300f. Right below the throttle lever is where it was hottest. There were other spots at 250-280 as well. But the closer i got to the valve cover the more it matched the thermostat housing area.

It just seems the closer to the middle of the intake you go the hotter it was

Is this normal ??

Yes, the exhaust cross over runs through that area. So pretty expected and normal for that area to be hot.

Yes, a hot intake can reduce power as the air will be less dense. But the air is also cooled as it goes through the carb. So the power loss is minimal for an otherwise stock engine.

It does however improve atomization, which leads to a cleaner running engine, and helps is very cold weather.

There are aftermarket intakes that have those ports blocked.

Yes it does. Posted pics over on your post in the AMC Forum, of my OEM 2 bbl to 4 bbl aluminum intake swap, and you can really see how they connect off the heads.
