NP229 case vent

I’m on the hunt for a transfer case vent fitting for my 89 grand wagoneer (np229)

I never had one so I’m not sure exactly what I should look like. I found some GM ones that appear to clip in with an O-ring and a few others online but nothing that claims to fit a 208/228/229 etc.

Anyone know a part number or where I can find something for this? Part 76

I done have any intention to do any heavy off-roading or mud but I’d prefer to have a proper breather instead of just plugging it. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Shouldnt it just be an elbow with a rubber vacuum line on it with those plastic things that let air in and out ?

You dont wanna plug it. itll blow the seals

Right, just trying to find an elbow that will work in this application. I never had one so I’m trying to find out what I need or how it attaches

I can't find it in the later books (you are welcome to download and look through the 88J book from the Tom Collins site.) The earlier book shows it on both the 208 and 219 as the same PN, 8130985. I presume the 229 uses the same part.

I would try some of the retailers that sell parts or rebuild these NP cases.

Smart, I gave up once I went through all the later manuals. That should be the ticket. Thanks!

I’ll have to download some of the earlier model books too now…

I looked in the '74-80 book which just barely includes the NP era. Not available except to purchase, AFAIK. RockAuto has it on CD or USB, under $25 IIRC.

Here we go, NP229 from the strategic reserve, 5/16 OD for the vent tube

I'll look at the one I pulled from my wag and see if it has one. If so, you can have it for shipping. The viscous was failing, so I opted for a 242.

Edit: Looked and it's there, intact, with the vent tubing still connected. The issue is how difficult would it be to remove without damaging. I'm leaning toward removing the rear yoke, and pulling the tail cone to ship it to you. Just note that the lip in the tail cone for the seal is slightly gouged from a botched seal removal on my part, so you'll have to address that or work at your leisure to remove that elbow for your use.

Let me know if you want it.

i'd get a 12" piece of 5/16 brake line get a tube bender, bend and cut as needed , clean the outer case and j.b weld (epoxy) it in place since its a vent line there is no pressure and you will have the fix you need just a thought,
