Actual Fuel Capacity

Post by JWestfall »

I emptied and dropped my stock gas tank in my 71 Wagoneer to fix the sending unit. After re-install the empty tank, I put in 5 gallons from a gas can. I drove 1 mile to the gas station and it took 17.4 gallons. I thought these were 21 gallon tanks. Is my local gas station dishonest with their pumps or does the tank actually hold almost 23 gallons?

The tank itself is 21 gallons. However, I know with my '75 Cherokee it would often end up filling up much of the filler tube, which held a few gallons. I found this out as the elbow at one point started to leak fuel every time I filled up.

Well some claim it's like 23. I put 22.9 gallons in it once, pretty sure it's in the 23-24 gallon range with the fuel filler. If you still have the massive stock fuel filler it might be closer to 25.

When I fill up it's almost always in the 19-21 gallon range that it takes.

There are 2 major differences between new Wranglers and FSJs. FSJs are meant to be both utilitarian and capable, not just capable. FSJs are also rarely initially recognized as Jeeps by the average American.

My tank took exactly 22 gallons after a trip. I know I was pretty close to empty since I filled the tank with 5 gallons from a Jerry can since I sputtered to a stop. I then drove 70 miles to the nearest gas station. Not really sure how I made it since I never get over 10mpg.

My light is always on when it takes around 17 gallons to fill up. Ive ran out of gas once on it and oddly made it another 6 miles with just 500ml bottle of gas. And then ran out as i rolled to tge station pump lol.

Most i think ive ever managed to get in it was 17-18. Gas gauge is odd too.. from less than 1.4 tank to half is only 4.5 gallons. But from half to full is like 11

So half a tank really is only like 5-7 gallons. And half to full is 10+
