Differential gasket help needed

Post by Binderrod »

I’m try to find a gasket for my Dana 44 front differential with a vacuum motor on my 1984 J10 with a Quadra trac. Every where I look I only find a standard Dana 44 gasket. I’m sure this is the same front axle that the Grand Wagoner uses with a Quadra Trac. Can anyone help me out?

Thanks Keith

Can't do it for you right now. However, there is the 81J parts book online at the Tom Collins site that covers '81=85 Jeeps. Suggest you look up the Jeep part number for the gasket you need and search online for that part number. RockAuto has a place to search by part number.

If you can't find one you can always use RTV. It sucks but you can do it.

There are 2 major differences between new Wranglers and FSJs. FSJs are meant to be both utilitarian and capable, not just capable. FSJs are also rarely initially recognized as Jeeps by the average American.

Looking at the book, I don't see any gasket as such. There is a packet of sealant shown. Suggest you look at the TSM for your year - if Jeep dropped the paper gasket, there should be instructions to that effect in the TSM.

Greetings Keith
As for differential sealing, I have used this product: https://www.permatex.com/products/gaske ... aker-3-oz/
It is specific for sealing locations exposed to gear oil. For the last few years this has been my go-to gasket maker for manual transmissions, transfer case pans, and differential covers. I use this product rather than a gasket. I have had excellent sealing results. Use it sparingly so you don't have it squeezing out both in and outside of the cover.
Cheers!

the disconnect has some seal according to the TSM, but the disconnect base/housing is well above the oil level ...

As for the differential cover, what Kowpie is using seems perfect to replace the paper gasket. I have used plain jane silicone blue or black, because I believe that paper gasket are outdated.
