Rusty's 6 inch lift for QT

Post by 9.3x62 »

Finally lifted my 79 waggy. Rusty's 6 inch kit. Nothing much to add in regard to the install process, everything I dealt with had been addressed in other threads, here and on the mothership, ifsja.org. Still, any questions anybody might have, I'd be happy to share while it's fresh in my mind.
I am wondering though, for those who've installed a comparable amount of lift on a full time QT, what did you do in regard to the front drive shaft? Length, high angle?

Does your front drive shaft clear your exhaust? On my '75 I had to re-route the exhaust to go over the drive shaft, as the drive shaft would hit the exhaust when the passenger side wheel drooped.

For photos, its easiest to either use tapatalk (if uploading from a phone), or to attach an image using the attach button below the text area (requires using the full editor). And the image needs to be scaled down some if its a full resolution.

My drive shaft ain't gonna place nice with the exhaust, unfortunately. But at least I won't have to relocate my rear shock mounts! Lucked out on that one.
Yeah, as far as photos go, I must be missing some brain cells. I've tried tapatalk, imgur, Flickr, AND just doing it through attachments. None of the methods are working for me. Gonna try again later.

Possible you are using the pics direct from your phone's camera? Maybe too large. I thought that Tapatalk automatically resizes, maybe not. I have no trouble posting my camera's pics resized to 640x480 or 800x600 using drag and drop (attachments) in the "Full Editor and Preview." I use a resizing freeware app (pixresizer) on my computer's desktop.

So, my tech incompetence aside, I'm curious to know what is it that most people do with the front drive line on a full time quadra track after doing a 6 inch lift, or SOA. Mostly I'm concerned with pinion angle, I suppose. I don't think my pinion is pointing straight at the case anymore, which as I understand, is what you want when you have a cv at the case and a u-joint at the axle? (I should buy an angle finder)

You are stuck with the pinion angle unless you rotate the spring mounts on the axle tubes. Typically you need more caster on a lifted Jeep, not less.

You could go part time and only use the front axle in 4x4 mode. The angle does not matter so much at slow speed and for occasional use. To me, 6" is a lot of lift for these Jeeps ... kinda think it throws away the advantages of the original low COG of the Jeep design. I'd cut before I lifted much.

I would check your angles first on your pinion face, then once you get some solid numbers...you can talk to a good drive line shop and see what they recommend.

Will do. Tom Woods seems to have come up with solutions for a lot of folks.
