J10 seat swap to 2015 Chevy

Post by Txflyer16 »

Has anyone ever put 2015 Chevy split bench or similar into a J10 (successfully)? Pics and wisdom would be appreciated. Obviously there's some fab work involved.

Not sure if my experience is applicable. I installed a full bench seat from an '86 Ford in my '73 J truck. I had to fab mounts from the seat rails so that there are pads that sit on the floor. I also had to trim a considerable amount of sheet metal from the center section of the seat to fit over the trans tunnel. It is a tight fit as it appears that the J truck cab is a bit narrower than other full-size truck cabs.

Yes, J-truck is narrow compared to other full-size pickups.

The flares allow a wide rear axle with the narrow body. Provides a 4'-plus distance between the wheel houses. The rest of the truck is more like mid-size, like the Dodge Dakota.

I think your biggest challenge is going to be the wiring. But if you can find a wiring diagram it should be pretty straightforward.

There are 2 major differences between new Wranglers and FSJs. FSJs are meant to be both utilitarian and capable, not just capable. FSJs are also rarely initially recognized as Jeeps by the average American.

Thanks for the responses. How about other seat replacements? What have others used?

I've read on old threads on IFSJA that the ZJ Grand Cherokee seats swap in really well, however since they don't make foam for them anymore I'd recommend that you don't go that route.

I really like the way the '10-'14 Ford truck seats feel; they don't really hold you in, but they're nice comfortable seats. I also really like how the Recaros in my dad's Mustang ('00 Cobra R seats but bought straight from Recaro; they're actually a gray cloth instead of charcoal), but I wouldn't recommend those for long trips and stuff, unless you're building a race-type truck. Frankly they probably don't even make that style anymore.

They do make seat foam for the old YJs and TJs still, and those had some pretty nice seats.

Also interesting that yours is a '79, as in the pics I can see that it has the earlier style door latches, which was a mid-year '78 change.

I still have the factory bench in mine but I like what you have going on there. It looks like it might be a little tight but if you can get it mounted up and wired that'll be a sweet set up.

You did a clean job there with the mounts, that really looks nice.

I think the issue you will run into with those seats (the chevy ones) is the height. I put Wrangler JK seats in my J10, and they were very comfortable. But like most modern SUVs/Trucks, they sat high due to the bottom being thick. So high that I could barely get under the steering wheel. So I ran with them for a while, but ultimately removed them. And there was no real way to make them sit lower due to the trans hump.

IMO most modern seats aren't that comfortable anyway; the Chevys and Jeeps especially just don't fit me right. I know the headrests are safer, but assuming you don't get in a crash, the rest of the time it's just such a pain when they stick forward like that.
