Walker lists a tailpipe for a 1980 Wag w/360, nothing earlier. I'd think it would be the same for my '77 but since they stop at 1980 I wanted to check to see if anyone has used this part on an earlier rig.

One thing to consider is the 80+ Wags have a centered rear differential where your 77 is right a hand differential. The tailpipe has to clear the axle and this part may not.

I knew there’d be a reason and I knew someone here would know. Thanks for saving me from learning the hard way.

Also, the exhaust manifolds were different between 79 and older, and 80 and newer. So the Y-pipe is entirely different.

If you get anything walker.. make sure you paint thr tailpipe with high temp paint. Burn the oil off first by driving it.. then paint it.

Those walker pipes 3ust out in two years if you dont. Had to replace my moms 4.0 muffler and tailpipe a 2nd time after a shop used walker stuff.. my wagoneer only had walker.. which is fine at least someone is making them right ?

I painted it twice in the last 6 years and its been holding fine.

I've been reading about that and am planning to try the paint thing. The existing one is pretty rough.

Yea just swap in the walker. Drive it for an hour or whatever to burn the oil off. And go to lowes and get some black high temp paint. And coat it all. Especially where the ribs are and where thr pipe was press welded together on the sides. They rust horribly in those spots.

I know it sounds like a pain.. but these walker pipes are chinesium steel

You could just go to an exhaust shop and have them build one for you. It may cost a bit more, but the materials may be of better quality.

Am going to a muffler shop, there's an old school place family run place in the neighboring town that looks not risky.
The exhaust system is still solid but super rusty and I'm sure it'll be a bear to separate the parts. I suspect either a clogged muffler or Cat and if they do the muffler and the tail pipe I can easily change out the Cat if it ends up the muffler wasn't the problem. I want it to be quieter anyway so it's not like I'm buying something I didn't need. The slip fit and clamps on the Cat will be clean and new and the Y-pipe has a flange with 4 bolts, I can easily cut those bolts to replace the Cat if the nuts refuse to unwind.
If they call to tell me the Cat's plugged I'll just let them fix the whole thing.

IME a muffler shop won't slip-fit pieces together. Or they will slip-fit then weld. Their systems don't come apart like the factory parts. Again, in my experience. Just be aware - a competent custom shop will make a good, durable, quiet system if that's what you want.

muffler shop job should last a long time, still have the job done on the 74 in the mid 90's... so over 100K on that system.

On the 85 I installed the walker tailpipe after the cat... in the early 2000's, I had to redo the tailpipe 15 years later with 20Kmiles. The metal is thinner...

Hmmm thanks for the heads up. I'd better play this differently at the muffler shop.

pay a few bucks and take it to a custom exhaust shop, mine from y pipe to tail with magnaflow was a little over 400.00 they used 16 ga pipe
