Just bought a 79 wagoneer and it’s my first old jeep. My problem is that my wagoneer will only move in low range. 4 wheel drive is engaged but will not move at all in high gear. Does anyone have any experience with this issue?

Welcome to the Borg Warner QuadraTrac. In stock form, you are in 4wd all the time. If it has the Nash or MileMarker part time kit, you get 2wd and 4wd. As far as the lo unit range goes, the flag shifter on the floor on driver side shifts the range. All the way down is Hi. Next click up is Neutral. Next click up is Lo Range. Are you sure you are not in neutral when in Hi?

Yeah, I’m sure it’s all the way down. In fact I’ve tried it in the neutral position as well.

I suspect there is something wrong with the low range unit when shifted to Hi. All power goes through the low range unit then through the chain. I would remove it for inspection.

Roger, it’ll be a couple of weeks before I can tear into it. What should I be looking for?

Just asking, you have checked to see that all the vacuum hoses are hooked up right and working.

The vacuum shifter is for normal full time and Edrive modes (if converted to part time it is 2wd and 4wd modes) and has nothing to do with Hi or Lo range modes.

I'm not sure as I have not worked on this particular problem. It sounds like it is not engaging Hi range but is engaging Lo range. Something with the internal shifter, shift fork??

I have actually thought about this some more. If you haven't dropped the low range yet, I would try disconnecting the shift linkage at the low range and manually shift it to high range then try to move it under it's own power. The linkage may need adjustment. If it won't move, definitely time to drop low range for inspection.
