Have any of you seen this text scam yet?

There's a new scam going around over text message that I just can't figure out. It's happened to several friends, family members and myself. Essentially we've been getting messages from FedEx's official number "48773" saying that a package has been received at the local Walgreens but when you call Walgreens they're clueless. The text message will take you to FedEx's actual website and shows legitimate tracking information. When you look at the tracking info it will show shipping from "Portland, OR" and the destination is always a different city...the origination city ALWAYS shows Portland, OR.

The best I can figure out is that somebody is using the drop off box at Walgreens for FedEx and attaching information from random people to it. They're using the Walgreens closest to where each of us live. Crazy thing is several of my friends have moved several times and live nowhere near where their phone number is from yet the Walgreens closest to where they actually live is involved.

Curious if any of you guys have run into this? FedEx won't divulge the information on where it's from or where it's going even though we are tied to the shipments.

I have not had that happen to me. But, there is no shortage of scams, most pray on older people that just don't have any understanding on how pretty much anything technology related works.

This video actually just came outa few days ago. Has some interesting info on one of the more popular scams going around:

So what is the scam? I am not really following. Does the text ask for personal info?

It does not and that is the weird part. It appears that people are shipping things using the name and info of the person getting the texts but that’s about all we can really figure out.

Looks more like a glitch in the system than a scam to me. Maybe someone put it wrong phone number or something?

They may be shipping illegal goods and using other people's info as a cover.

If you have the tracking number, re route the package, return to sender, or hold for pickup. There are a few things you can do to make it a pain for them.

So a package actually goes to Walgreens and someone else grabs it?

Have heard the same idea that dkerr suggested. Persons purchasing illegal goods and using something like this so as not to be traceable.

After talking with FedEx that's what they think.
