Small under hood light project today

Had an LED trailer license plate light and a random door switch so rigged up an under hood light today just because.. once you pop the hood it turns the light on and lights the whole engine bay. I plan on installing an override switch later for when wrenching in the daytimeImageImage

👍 I’ve been trying to figure out where the switch is for the 88 GW. I’m thinking the same thing about adding a switch for when the hood is up for a week while I’m working and get back in the next weekend to eliminate battery drain.

No idea where it would be on an 88. This was more for less just something to do out of boredom lol

On GW with stock hood light there is a mercury switch, it is mounted right behind bulb in the hood lamp. Switch itself is a small bullet-shaped thingy with a drop of mercury rolling inside - in horizontal position it’s open, but when turned more vertical mercury moves and closes the contacts

Gotcha. I just used a door jamb dome light switch from something I have no clue what it would have fit lol. When depressed it breaks ground contact. When the hood is popped it connects the ground. I like keeping things simple. No need for anything that comes with a warning sign on the peropidic table

I think in stock lamp switch connects 12v side, but better check with TSM. It should last forever (there’s nothing to break in it), but it can get corroded on the outside, so some sanding should do it

And here’s how it looks

Sorry about that :D just trying to give Nutsiam more info about stock GW setup :-bd

Good job with LED light - it puts way more light out than stock one for sure! And that horn is very impressive too :)

Well that makes since I was suspecting mercury switch but was still looking around hinges to see if there was one. Thank you
