Headlight options for Rhino

Post by ShawnQ »

Guys, just got a rhino grill that I plan to install on my 88 grand wag.

I have the trim rings, but no lights. What are my options for headlights? I'd prefer newer brighter technology with lower power draws, but don't want to break the bank.

I have the pie pans, but eventually want to go with 4 lights. Any input on these is helpful also.

Looking for some input.

Thanks
Shawn

There was an article on Pirate covering a comparison of various headlights not too long ago. Interesting read, you might start there. I am almost sold on the TruckLite LED's. I think they are about $250 a set right now. If the price continues to drop I will probably pull the trigger soon.

I am a big fan of HID lights, but not a fan of the cheap conversion housings out there and most don't pass DOT. HIDs really need a projector lense to be most effective and installing a HID bulb into a housing designed for a halogen bulb doesn't work for me. But it works for some.

Getting closer... :fsj:

We've used LED headlights in some of our products and I am impressed. We also use Trucklite product extensively and they are a quality manufacturer so I have no reservations about the brand whatsoever.

Blake, do the CJ lights have the three prongs like the waggie for direct plug-in?

Yeah, they are the same electrical connector. I think the rings are different for FSJ's vs CJ's. Close, but a little different IIRC.

I am in the middle of doing this right now. There are some DOT approved crystal and metal housings on ebay for about $60 that a HID conversion will go into for the 7 inch lights. I have some 5 &3/4 buckets from a 70s Nova that I think will work for the pie pan area. There are also housings available in that size. There is a member over on IFSJA that makes a relay harness to run all these lights from the battery but still uses the stock switch to control them.

Would you mind sharing those links to ebay ads so I can save them?

I went with a Delta housing and 60W/55W H4s for my TJ. I also made my own harness with relays to power them. I don't have the link handy, but I should be able to scrounge it up when I get home from work. It was an ebay purchase.

Ok, found the link for you if you're interested.

I used Hella E-code for mine. They have the removable bulb so i may switch to a HID kit one day. Right now I'm very happy. Should also add that I did the relay conversion some time ago also.

I was wanting HID until I read around on this site; http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech ... d/HID.html
There's a ton of information there and the guy is quick to answer questions. I'll be ordering his upgrade kit and a pair of Cibie lights this week.
Having seller's regret.

X2 on the Hella E code for 10 years, they have a very good pattern, the right raised side that let you see cyclist and pedestrians. The Hella are a known brand, not some aftermarket items made by some unknown company.

I love to drive at night and this was the best light upgrade with the addition of the relay, to get the battery voltage.

A couple of points

Do your own research & you can find the information you want to hear. Google HID comparisons & pick which everway you want to go.
The right housings with the right cut off point is critical no matter which you use.
Any lighting system can & is cloned including Cibie. Cibie KC Daylighter are the most likely to get cloned. Which watch is most likely to be cloned a $5.00 timex or a $5,000.00 Rolex?
The 60's headlight rims for CJ's & FSJ's are the same I have several sets.
Quality HIDS will last 3 to 5 times longer than incadescents.
HIDs can be bought in any spectrum.
Like any other lighting system done right they will work well.
Don't think because you buy a certain brand it isn't a clone LOL.
Relays are highly recommended for any Headlight improvement.
There's no wrong decision.

LOL the KC's are clones
Maybe they can & do work & there is no denial. New techology has always been scourned by those that don't understand it.

Hei Ignitions, relay electrical systems, Fuel injection. Electric fuel pumps Will exploode inside the fuel tank. , disk brakes are all in that category.

All in fun I remember when square headlights were dangerous & illegal

George barris made Sonny & Cher a pait of mustangs & used this foriegn Squared headights that were deamed illegal because & only because they were square & made by a bad conpany called UH CIBIE. They were not allowed to be drivev n in th estreet because of this for 3 years then all of a sudden Ford & GM started using them. Then they were OK the cars had already been sold by the pair. The l;ights were unapproved killers.
