I run a Lincoln Mark VIII electric fan in my Jeep (LY5/4L60E), works perfectly. Run one in my dad's '59 Impala (LS3/6L80E), works perfectly.
But the cooling system has to be right for any fan to work.
Assuming the cooling system is in good shape, at what speeds are you having difficulty? I'm guessing by your description that it gets warm around 20mph, but cools down at 50mph? But it doesn't go higher than 210-220? What temp is your cooling fan coming on at?

My 80 FSJ ran hot with the stock fan and no shroud. I replaced the Radiator, put a Kool Flow iron water pump in, a 165 thermostat and all new hoses.
Still would run hot a low speeds or sitting at idle after running down the high way.
Bought a ZM fan shroud that was a piece of junk throw it in the trash.
Went with the Contour fan with a 185 on/off switch mount to the heater hose.
I do have an oversize A/C condenser core that is as large as the radiator plus the factory tow package trans cooler which also blocks the air flow.
With the Contour fan the gauge stays below the half way mark even pulling long hills then sitting at idle it goes right back down the first mark.
Works great for me I highly recommend the Contour fan.
Many of us have had no luck with the contour fans. I used one and I would constantly overheat climbing passes and running on the interstate. Put in a mechanical (19" GM Vortec fan and built a shroud) and my gauge won't go over 206°.

With the multi-speed fans it’s possible to wire them only for their low speed setting. Which pulls half the air. Not saying this was your issue, but it’s a note to anybody else looking into them.

I have a contour fan setup, only have the high side wired up, and on my 440 with aluminum FSJ radiator I have no heat issues. Fans maybe click on for 20-30 seconds and then off again on thermostat control. This is on hot, humid days here in NJ, down at ECI in NC, up in the mountains of PA wheeling. No issue.
