Comanche blinker issues !

Post by AMGeneral »

Ok so my great nephew is having issues with his blinkers. Has hazzard's, brake lights, and tail lights .
No left turn or right turn signals.

Parts replaced:
All light bulbs.
Round silver flasher.
2 fuses (20a) stop/tail and haz/sig.
Turn signal switch.

Now I wasn't sure but I was thinking is there a secondary flasher ? Or breaker fuse ?

If the brake lights are not working it isn't the flasher, it's most likely bad grounding, or more likely no voltage.

Time to break out the multi-meter and trace down where the voltage drops off.

Ok I stopped by to look at it.

The brake lights work, The tail lights work, The head lights work, and All marker lights work. The turning signals do NOT work, flip on the left signal nothing happens. Flip on the right signal nothing happens.

The TURN signals don't NOT flash unless you use the HAZZARDs !

So I'm lost I think its wiring, All the light bulbs light up and putting on the hazzards causes all 4 corners to blink so that would tell me both filaments are good and so is the flasher unit is good.

So what does the turn signal switch put power to that the hazzards and brake lights by pass ?

It may be in the column too. That's where it failed on my J10. Had to replace the mechanical part inside the column.

Never thought of that, I haven't had any lighting issues with my Comanche other burn out bulbs and one flasher stat failure which I replaced with the diode unit instead of another thermo/mech unit.

There are 2 flashers. One on the fusebox is for 4ways and the other is behind the bottom panel on the dash by the steering wheel.

Steering wheel ? I found 2 flasher's the Fuse panel diagonal from each other. Both of those are functioning. So you'd have to post up something for me to reference.

We had the dash by column torn apart to replace the blinker switch. I did NOT see any such unit. The flasher diagram don't even show any such device. Just 2 flashers in the fuse block.

Yep both fuses replaced ! He is going to be pulling it off the road in a few weeks to put an AMC-343 V8 into it so I told him to just by pass all that smart stick crap. Move the brights to a floor dimmer, swap in a stand alone blinker system like big trucks used. For the wipers roto-zip out a hole and mount an old time wiper control.

I'm sure its a wiring issue, Being that he is going from an injected 4 to carb'd 8 just take the electronic systems back to simpler system that worked great for decades ;-)
