YJ D35 how much play should it have?

'92 YJ with D35 rear axle. Open difs on 33's We've noticed a clunking sound from the rear for a while. Jacked up the rear today and noticed that both driver/pass tires have a good 1/8" of play 'in and out' meaning that the shafts are able to slide out 1/8". I could actually see the brake drum move while the backing plate was stationary.

Is that normal? It seems to be getting worse and this is my wifes DD for a 5 mile commute.

(currenlty building a 14 bolt/D44 HP, but that will take another couple of months)

The spec is 0.125", so you are most likely in spec. A bit of a clunk is normal for them as that shaft does slide in and out.

Interesting. Well maybe we will just keep driving it and hopefully get the axle swap done before a wheel flies off.

yeah, I know...

The YJ lived an easy life and was used as a daily commuter for an 80 mile round trip drive. We won't take it 'wheeling until the tons go in.

On a side note, I've got a spreadsheet detailing all the parts required to build a set of axles. All new bearings, seals, gears, carrier, brakes, etc. The total is $2500 and that does NOT include any lockers

This is not a cheap hobby, even if doing it yourself.
I got a deal on my d44's already assembled w alloy shafts, ARB's and 4.56 gears. The rear was modified to use the 35 spline D44 ARB and shafts. I jumped on it after verifying the axles, components, etc. and replaced the bearings just because I was in them.
The cost for tons can go much higher .. bigger $ to go bigger. I don't see myself needing anything beyond my D44's on my YJ, but we have all heard that before..

Blake, have you looked at doing a Ford 8.8 swap? It's a little stronger than the D44, and the stock axles are fairly cheap to get.

yeah, I've swapped an 8.8 into my buddies XJ.

But in the end, nothing beats a 14bolt! I'll try and get some pics up, but we swapped in a 14bolt rear with detroit and 5:38 gears, disk brakes and a '78 D44 HP up front.
