It's really embarrassing that you guys keep referencing my build, and I haven't worked on the thing in months. :(

Confirmed my 4l70e is a 27 spline output and the 149 t/c is 27 spline input.

Ordered a new harness from PSI
Ordered a Lokar cable shift kit from Summit
Ordered a delphi fuel pump for 2002 2dr blazer from RockAuto
Ordered a spectra fuel tank for 2002 2dr blazer from RockAuto
Ordered a 99 corvette fuel filter/regulator from RockAuto

Received my Novak radiator, fan, and engine cover and mounts. I just looked at their site and the price for the radiator bumped up $100 since my order. Ay carumba. While I'm not a radiator scientist, I think this is as close to a sealed system with the fan as you can get without welding them together.

Wow, that looks a little restrictive. All the incoming air has to exit through the fan area. I think I would like to see a few pressure flaps in the blank side.

I wonder, think I could just use a pipe expander and solder that fitting into the neck?

Great build. I would hold off on the engine cover. The stock one may fit. Mine did with over an inch of clearance. I used the same radiator/fan assembly from Novak. It works great and cools very well. I've had no problems with any of my Novak stuff. Link to my build thread is below. I used mainly Novak equipment, some BJS Offroad and very little teamgrandwagoneer.com stuff. They are a horrible company to deal with IMHO.

The newer vortec cover is ridiculously tall, and definitely needs to come off. I think "maybe" if I didn't have dynamat hood liner on the underside it could squeeze, but it's think and I'm not pulling it off.

Here's a photo from someone else's build with the same cover:

Any reason you didn't just reuse the stock manifolds and went for shorty headers? I don't see any gains from those that makes the expense worth it from dyno sheets, long tubes yes but they won't fit. What do you think after finishing yours?

Actually have bought a ton of stuff from BJ's when redoing the interior, this is the first time I've tried Novak with good results and definitely quality parts. I have bought some small things from the other but due to seeing others issues, stay away on anything I actually need.

The majority of my interior parts such as carpet also came from BJS. My motor was old enough that it had the EGR system on the exhaust manifolds. I had Novak customize my wiring harness to get rid of all that emission junk. So instead of plating off the exhaust manifold and making it look ugly, I went with the custom headers. The power gains from these Vortec swaps is just insane. With the intake, headers, exhaust, and custom computer tune. I figure I'm sitting around 350 horse power. I have 3.31 gearing in my axles and at 80 mph I'm sitting at about 2000 RPM. The 4L70E you are putting in, is it still a four speed?

4 spd, it's a beefed up 4l60. I would have switched the manifolds too then since the bungs were on them, who wants to go through all this and have the engine bay look like a rigged hotmess.

How did you verify your axle ratio? I've looked all over on the pumpkins and can't find it, and its not in the glovebox. That's the only reason I haven't gotten a reprogram yet, was going to wait until last minute when I can crack open the case and look inside.

Who did your custom tune, did you do it with hp tuners/something else or did you email tables off and get a new map to upload? I was going to have Black Bear do it, but the guy is painfully slow to reply via email, won't talk on the phone, and rather uninformative. I am going to just get a preprogrammed ecm from psi that made my harness so I could get up and running, then go with an email tune from someone once things are sorted. Dyno tuning is out of the question for me without going to seattle and finding someone that can run an awd. I'm not adverse to this, but follow up support would be nonexistent.

Novak did my tune along with my custom wiring harness. You just have to tell them some basic information and they get it right back to you. It comes with three free re-tunes as well. I had them do fairly stock timing/fuel curves. I could probably squeeze another 10-15 horse out of it if I tried. Novak is located just up in Northern Utah so they're close. My axles still had their tags on them, that is where I found my gearing information.

You can guesstimate your rear axles. Jack the rear up, Turn the drive shaft and count how many times the rear tires turn.

Quick update. The engine is in the hole, the awd transfer case mounted up perfectly to the 4l70e and is on the stock crossmember mounting for now. Not sure about drivelines yet, that gets tackled next week. The Novak mounts worked great, everything fits, including the transmission dipstick. Looks like I have a couple inches of space between the novak radiator fan and the engine. The radiator isn't in yet, just test fitted it then pulled it again.

When pulling apart the old harness, found out it had been spliced back together twice, within 1' of each other. One was completely spliced together, the other looked like half the wires were cut and reconnected. I'll guess this was chewed apart, can't see it being cut on purpose.

The adapter for the fuel tank worked perfectly, I took it in to a radiator shop and they expanded the neck and sweat in the copper piece. They also changed out the vent hose nozzle from 1/2" to 3/4" to match up with the stock lines. Both filler and vent hose will connect straight to the tank without any reducer pieces in between.

Image

Did a bit on the dash while the guys were working on getting the engine in the hole, mounted up the digital dakota piece up, requires minor plastic trimming to the stock piece, and pulled apart the steering column to replace the ignition and control stalk. Going to throw a flaming river wheel on there too while I'm at it and get rid of the grant wood one with a super deep dish.

Image

Some things I needed to pick up that I was unaware of, got them from PSI. Needed a tcc switch, my MAF sensor was bad so needed to replace it. Also, bought an already put together relay for the radiator fan.

KIT-1002 1 TCC/BRAKE SWITCH KIT 21.99
ACC-1004 1 GM GEN IV VORTEC MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR (MAF) (2007 - CURRENT) 100.00
KIT-1010 1 FAN RELAY KIT 49.00

The PSI harness was great, just had one issue with the o2 sensors not matching. Pulled the pins and put the old harness sensors on the PSI harness and problem solved.

Image

The drive by wire pedal I got with the engine doesn't look like it will fit without a bit of modification because the plastic pedal sweeps right of the firewall mount. Looks like I'll need to get it almost to the steering column. I got a chevy replacement that has the mount directly above the pedal.

One more thing involving the harness, the Gen IV has a delete plate that doesn't have the untapped end for the oil sensor. I could tap the flat delete plate, but since I was ordering something else from Jegs I went ahead and bought this.

Great info and progress.
How much room do you have between your passenger header and heater box?

I think there's an inch of space at the closest point, I'll get a pic Monday when I head back up to the shop.

Looks like there will be plenty of room to work in the engine, oil filter is super easy to get to, plugs are all easy to get to as well. I didn't get a good look at it today, just dropped in quick to see the mounted engine and drop off the additional pieces.

The plug closest to the heater box and closest to the brake booster are the only tough ones.

What hole did you put your Novak mounts in?

You can also use this adapter for the stock pressure location behind the intake. Not sure about the gen iv but the gen iii computers don't have input from the oil pressure sensor, used for gauge.

So are you not using the oil cooler? Blocking it off for a sensor?

Also curious about the sensor, I plan to use the same digital dash as you but was wondering what to use for the oil pressure and temp senders. I would assume that what comes form Bj's will fit the AMC engine, what do you need to buy to tie it into the 5.3? Is that new sensor (in the jegs plate) the sensor for the digital dash? I have the single wire oil pressure sender at the back of the intake and have heard there is 3 wire that I would need to make it all work. Did you just add a second temp sensor?

Thanks

Jeff
