I decided to keep ahold of my79 chief as the 16yo boy wants to make it his. I read a lot that the NP 205 is the best cheapest transfer case swap for the 360/ 400 combo that came stock in this jeep. My question is what 205 should I look for? I see Chevy, Dodge and Ford. Which one is the right one ? I understand I will have to make modifications and get an adapter. Can anyone share their experience here?
Thanks
If you get a chevy you won't have to get a special adapter. You will have to swap to a 32 spline th400 tail shaft and find a stock adapter. Do some homework since there are 5+ 32 spline tail shafts for the 400. There's a 4x4 long and short shaft depending on the transfer case input shaft. Most common is TH400 to NP205 = 4 1/2" from tail housing surface.
Going dodge or ford will cause some mods. I have a ford since I have driver side drop but took a bit of fab work.

Dodge ran passenger drop for a great many years, if I'm not mistaken. Through all of the 70s at least.

Correct.
I run a Dodge t-case behind my TH400.

The 205 is a huge case, there isnt a ton of room on the passenger side for a 205 and the exhaust. I was going to go with a 205 behind my 700r4. Just something to consider. Once you address the output of the trans it will open up a bunch of options for a transfer case.
I took a 2wd TH400 out of a Caddy, took the tail cone off, put an adapter and hung my D-20 and have been running it for almost 5 years now, behind a Caddy BB.
Dana 20's are also an excellent option and are a smaller case. Just so you know theres other options.
