New Yukon Gear GM 10 bolt spider gears too tight

Post by Jeffsj »

Hoping for some insight here. I am working on putting a GM 10 bolt into my Cherokee and the rear end I picked up had worn out spider gears, so I ordered new ones from Yukon Gear. The new spider gears fit ridiculously tight. I actually had to tap the thrust washers and spiders into place. Now I can't even move the gears. I even slid the axle through the side gear and tried to turn the carrier. Nothing doing! Has anyone ever had this issue before? does it start out tight like this and wear itself in, or is something wrong? Thanks
Jeff

Sounds like you need thinner shims to me. You used the same shims from the worn spiders on the new ones?

I used the new thrust washers that came in the kit. I did take it apart again and put the old washers on the side gears. I can at least turn the axle now, but still seems tight. I would just use the old washers for the spiders too, but one of them has the starts of a hairline crack in it. I thought these kits were supposed to be an easy swap out, but like everything else I try to do on this thing anymore, it's turning into a headache. :banghead: Thanks for the response Flint.

Sorry Jeff, I wish I had an answer...

The one time I did have an issue with a Yukon set, Jay had gotten a hold of a rep somehow and when I talked with the guy he was extremely helpful and we had it worked out fast. It was ring gears I used...
