On the smoking issue you can simply change to a heavier grade of motor oil, and there are a TON of additives out there, each one promising wonderful improvements for your engine, many of these additives have been around since the 1930s or longer, and opinions about them vary from user to user. A neighbor got some bad gas, later added a can of "miracle-goo" to his crank case, then filled up with good gas, car starts running better, he swears the "miracle-goo" did the trick, go figure. :P

You may not need to replace the socket. We had the same issue. Remove the housing assembly and clean where the socket fits into the housing. That is a ground point. It made a world of differance for me.
