NP208 bolt pattern?

Post by 4x4Dad »

Hey guys,

My NP229 just grenaded. Sounds like a can of rocks in there.

I've searched here and the mothership for this specific answer, but I can't find it, so here it goes.

I found a NP208 online locally with the following specs:
"Chevy NP208 transfer case. 27 spline input, 32 spline output. Removed from behind a 700R4."

Will this bolt up behind my stock TF727 or will I need an adapter?

88 Grand Wagoneer, recently rebuilt AMC 360, Howell TBI, Mallory HEI distributor, Doug Thorley headers, Magnaflow exhaust, NP242 with SYE, TF727, NO LEAKS!, 5-6" total lift (BJ's 4" inch spring lift + 2" blocks out back and 1" shackle lift out front), 1" body lift, 3.31 gears with factory tow package, 32" BFG's.

My Jeep has tricked me into thinking I know what I'm doing.

no

727's have a 23 spline output.

Advance adadpters sells an adapter to make it work. You would be better off swapping in the matching 700R4 and then dealing with the adapter for the amc engine/chevy tranny IMHO.

The front output will also be different. Chebby used a Passenger Drop and your 88 Wagoneer has a Driver's drop.

Bummer. I might just have to rebuild the 229. The tranny I have is leak free and works well so I don't want to swap it out.

I thought I'd read somewhere that 208s bolted in, but I was skeptical. I guess it's just some of them. Looks like I'll have to keep searching for now.

A *Jeep* 208 will bolt in in place of the Jeep NP229. A GM/Dodge/Ford 208 will not. They need to be adapted/clocked.

Got it.

I find, sadly, that I learn more about my rig when something breaks than at any other time.

I think I'll start looking for a np242 as well. I know that has some issues, such as the need for a SYE kit, but I like the option of full time 4wd.

The NP242 is an awesome t-case. Unless you plan on offroad hard, or adding a lot of lift, the slip yoke will be fine.

I found a local 242 with a SYE already installed. How complicated is the swap? Anybody know?

Depends what it came from. It may have the wrong spline count.

It's a 23 spline from a Grand Cherokee. My research says that's what I need to mate up with my 727.

Options: NP208 (Dodge or Jeep) will require a longer rear driveshaft and the Dodge version won't let you run 4x4 unless you swap the front axle.

What will bolt in place of the NP229 is NP228, NP219 (4x4 only) or AMC Eagle NP129 or NP128 (2wd and 4wd but no low range. Only the front yoke and speedo drive needs swapped to bolt it in) NP119 from an Eagle is 4x4 hi only.

And I am wrong... I bought the whole drivetrain for my CJ7, axles and all, so it didn't really matter which side it dropped.. sorry for my ignorance! LOL

All the GM 208's are passenger drop. When they went to the 241 it switched to driver drop for the IFS trucks.
