J10 vs Waggy Lift springs

Post by oldironneverdies »

I want to lift my 83 j10. I have a 1972 waggy with 3" lift kit that rides good and has lots of flex. Will the springs interchange?
Some adaptation is not a problem.

They will not. Both front and rear springs are different.

You truck will work with springs from 76 to 91.

This is an old post but Stuka is not 100% correct on this.

I have a 71 J4000 with an 82 J10 frame under it. I used Rancho 4404s in the front which is a 2.5” lift spring that bolts directly in place.

I used factory Cherokee rear springs (76-83), that I inboarded under the frame. Doing this I cleared 40” tires no problem. My front axle is a GM D60 King Pin and rear is a 14B. Soon to have Dana 80 front and rear.

You basically confirmed what I said. Note that the original poster was asking about a '72 Wagoneer and an '83 J10. A '72 Wagoneer used different front springs than 74+ FSJ's (Length and center pin distance are different), and it has 52" post mount rear springs which were used from 62-75. In 76 all springs were standardized so they were all the same sizes for all models, just different spring rates.

Ok. I must’ve over read some of that front pre 76 era front spring tech. I apologize. I went more to the rear on the spring tech info. The way you worded your post made it sound like rear wagon springs wouldn’t work under a Jtruck. In my defense it was 2am.

However, Stuka, if that guy wanted to inboard the rear springs using pre 76 springs, he can do that.

Yeah, he could. Though the 75 and older rear cherokee/wagoneer/SWB J-Truck springs are 52", 76+ are 57", so they flex better. Long bed J-Truck rear springs for 71-75 I believe are 57" also, but the bushings are different due to them being post mount.

And then the Gladiators have 2" wide post mount front springs, which are more similar to Willys Wagon/Truck front springs.

True true.

My theory is that guy may opt to use his early lift springs due to $$$.
Not entirely difficult to have a bushing made to take up the inner dia of that early 52” spring vs. 57” spring. He may not be overly concerned with flex, not entirely sure of his motivated thoughts.

Cost of springs have gone up over the last 15yrs. When I did the 6” spring lift on my Cherokee, I purchased the lift new with shocks and brake lines from Bjsoffroad for $800. Now I’m seeing just the springs for well over $1000. It has gotten ridiculously expensive like many other parts.
Not to argue or prove right from wrong. I was only trying to clarify why vs why not.

If it were me I’d either swap the frame from a lifted Wagon/Cherk or sell it and start over.

I did a SOA/SF for a guy in Minnesota with 4” lift springs 76-91, that Wagon sat up ridiculously high and road rough. That’s what he wanted, to each his own I guess.
