J10 DoorRebuild and Design - Need Input

Post by j10builder »

I'm about to start rebuilding my J10 doors and I have question or two. I found this guy on you tube who's gone through the entire process IN DETAIL and I'm grateful.

He makes it really clear that the membrane between the door panel and interior metal of the door needs to be sealed EXCEPT for the bottom where it is tucked into the slots so moisture (condensation?) can drain down and out through the drain holes in the interior bottom of the door.
I'm planning on using a thicker (1/8" - 3/16"?) dynamat type product between the door interior door panel and metal. Is there room for the additional matting without making it look bulky? Also, if the door is completely sealed and the dynamat is installed is condensation still the challenge/concern that it originally was?
I'm also considering putting tweeters where the mirror remote control was originally. Any thoughts?
Any thoughts and concerns are appreciated.

Put the tweeters in, and let us know what worked.

Membrane in the door only needs to be a heavy plastic, but if replacing with the dynamat product, would keep it thinner, rather than thicker. Just needs to keep the air transfer and moisture to the outside, rather than letting it come into the cabin area.

Just my $.02

the plastic moisture is or will still be needed, i assume you have the door panels removed , and the inner door panels have the stamped recesses that channel moisture down those channels and the plastic, if you install any sort of sound supression material such as D.M. you will still have the recesses and the interior panel will still be susceptible to moisture if you are in that type of environmental area where moisture is. , im in az so that is not and issue but i installed the plastic liner in the doors and used a D.M. type material in areas to dampen oil canning and rattle, with new interior, panels, D.M. , flooring with mass backing , almost all the noise went away, however the biggest noise reduction mitigator was installing ALL new seals to cut window rattle and air/wind noise JMO

Okay thanks for the input, Maybe since the doors are going to be stripped anyway I'll put the sound proofing on the inside of the door and put plastic back like stock application between door and panel. Side note, I posted on the parts wanted but I'm looking for 2 of the female side seat belt and buckles.

JMO - I would not consider used seat belts. My J20 came to me with the passenger 3-point belt cut through, apparently because the passenger did not want the shoulder strap. I tried to find a used belt to replace it; the one I found was not the exact same year. It required an extension for the reel bolt that made it work but it was not a great solution.

I decided I was being too cheap and bought all new belts with matching reels and lengths to match the originals. There are companies that will make your seat belts to order. All that's required is you measuring and completing the purchase. I also bought matching center belts. Very nice - easy to use and safer than trying to make used parts work in the wrong application.

Note that the state annual inspection in Massachusetts looks at seat belts. Anything janky will fail.

Yes, I would put the vitreous stuff on the door skin, inside the door. Don't make any places for water to pool - water goes down the inside of the door and out the drains in the bottom. You need the plastic between the door cards and the door, to prevent the door cards from getting wet. They are cardboard and will absorb water if exposed to the weather.

Thanks for the input. I've got the stock belts but the females both have cracked buckles. That's why the search. I'll research and consider new. I've already blown the non existent budget out of the water anyway.
Copy on the membrane. Door work starts tomorrow. Can't wait to see how much time this will take.
