Just a carb or injected carb. ...
Yeah, as described in the above link, it's not fuel injection. It's an electronically controlled carburetor, with a stepper motor that controls the jets. No high-pressure injection of fuel.

Well winters here in the Catskills so its time to take this jeep apartImage
Removed the windsheild washer tank /pump asembly and the radiator’s resevoir tank along with fuel vapor tank
Still finding nuts and cridder crap in places hard to see.
There are no brakes rusty lines , brake fluid damage on master cylinder and vac tank. New proportioning valve also called for along with new lines (cupro nickel in SS stone guard).

Looked over what has to happen to get front fenders off,way easy. The hard part was getting the 1st ss screw out of the hole of the rubicon stone guard, air wratchet and 10 mins bolts out which hold fenders on. Maybe really alittle longer but not bad at all.

The otherside took longer due to more items being afixed on the fender well, diconnect wires , hoses & such.
Lots of wires and hoses for pollution stuff , early 80’s were smog motors I do believe. Id love to get rid of all of it .
I hope I can put fuel injector type carb that holley has ,possibly headers too , have to look in to it more but thats future work.
So many wires spliced in here and there, saw wire that is wiggly from heat warp-age,thats spliced into head light wires, they did put fueses all over fun finding them .
I see they left the old coil in place when they ( whom ever they were) swapped the engine,I mean come on for real?
I see silicon rtv on gaskets so hope it was just new gaskets at the time

Well decided to remove radiator , removing bolts went well till this , the little clip broke,ok great now it just spins.
Took long stright blade screw driver and bent out the peice os steel I could reach.
Yes , it was the last bolt.Image
Thank goodness for vise grips, great for loosing those hard to free brake line fittings especially when the wrench slips and rounds out the edges.
Finished the bolt off w airwrachet.Image
While removing center grill mounting bolt looked at the body mounts , all look like this. Ahh more things to do. Checked other bushings ,mounts etc,. Not so good.Image
As you can see the stabilizer links need to be replaced along with motor mounts. The rubber bushings are breaking down .
More to doImage,but I like doing this.Image
Ooops,sometings missing
Got grill? Yup!
Image
I think it reads 13CL22
The engine stamp
The best I could get it to show up to read.
Any body else see it?.
Dont see any imprint before it ,I think thats it.

It's not an '84 date code.

Guessing it says carbureted 2V 258, March 22 1991.

Well the jeep is (found old insurance paper ) a 1984 cj7 parts have been changed most noticeable is the grill to a yj style. Been busy taking apart stuff
The engine was replaced w larger cui to a 258 one reason code doesn’t match the 84 date the PO said complete axels where changed.
If I could get back into taptalk I would post pics but I can’t its f-up.tried new acct old pass words nothing works.

Yeah, no. They screwed with the VIN. That is a straight up YJ. Why would you:
a: replace the whole body? Yes. The whole body. Not just grill. That has the fuel filler on driver's side. CJ was passenger.
b: the CJs had 258s and 304 AMC motors. The 258 was the smallest motor available for 84. That tells me that if there was a smaller motor, it would be a YJ with the 2.5.
c: replace a non disconnect passenger drop front axle with the disconnect YJ driver drop, and instead of doing a much easier 1 piece rear shaft install in the AMC 20, you go with a much less desirable 35?
d:use the YJ frame as well? That is not a CJ frame. The front shock mounts are not CJ versions.

That IS a YJ.
That dash is YJ.
Those seats are YJ.
It doesn't have a tailgate, but a swing door on the rear=YJ
That is a YJ from 87-95.

NOT an 84 CJ. AT ALL.
They effed with the VINs. Probably had a CJ junker and swapped the vin tag onto a good, but unregisterable YJ.

That label you keep referring to for your VIN? Stop referring to it for a minute. You want to find a stamped VIN or riveted tag to positively ID the vehicle.

Look at the top of the dash, right next to the windshield in the same area. What is the VIN on that riveted plate?
I can see the plate through the filthy glass on your pics of the windshield sticker.

Look on the firewall around the brake booster and wiring passing through. There will be a riveted tag there if a later YJ. On passenger side above battery on early YJs. Those also will have the VIN stamped on it.
Crossmember at front of fuel tank has VIN stamped into it. Gotta drop the tank to find it.
Driver's door may have something on it.
More info here: https://www.wranglerforum.com/threads/v ... b.2415433/

DMV will definitely be looking for a factory stamped VIN or riveted tag.

I guess if he's looking at this as a hobby and not spending any money on it... Or maybe off road only?

He has a whole buncha people who know what they're talking about telling him that's a Wrangler and no response? Seems rude.

I like a YJ more than a CJ, but I'm odd like that. I just don't want to see someone put a bunch of $$$ into something, only to realize they were told a lie by someone trying to offload a problem when they go to get legal documentation to register it.

I could find an insurance document in the glove box of my Jeep for a 1968 Ford F-100. That doesn't make my Jeep a F-100.
The DMV would be less than impressed if that were my argument.

They will absolutely insist on seeing a VIN plate affixed on the vehicle.

Ok guys ,I removed gas tank so will look for stamp on cross member. No stamp or tag on firewall near battery or driverside , the vin tag in windsheild matches the regi, One problem might of been the PO was nyc cop retired now. Well for off road only? I have 25 acres but that’ll get old fast though. Ive got a buddy working on legal stuff.
I Havent put any $$$$ into it just took apart.
Been working on Wagoneer changed front seal on balancer that was letting oil coat the under neath , power steering pump “remanufactured” drips cleaned it off w brake clean checked nxt day. So today, I found body seal leaks on it, well what else ,never took one apart so… take it apart I did. In side the housing of body where the “O”ring sits are hammer marks on the inside just enough to let the oil seep by when cold or come out more readily when warm.
What else trany leaks filler tube, other gaskets oooze , but thats it for now, Thanks for checking up and infiroming me on stuff I dont know. Happy Jan 20 th.

My initial gut feeling that they swapped a CJ windshield VIN plate into a YJ is growing stronger.

Now, get someone to run that frame vin #.

That is what you have.

The thing that is still confusing me is the pre 91 motor setup, but 92 and later family roll bar.
It is definitely a backyard creation that someone has done some sketchy stuff to, legally speaking.
Given it is NY and has been titled already, you may not have much issue, but still, it has been sitting for a while, so you want to arm yourself with as much info as possible.
