1984 Jeep Grand Wagoneer - AZ

Post by devildog80 »

1984 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, 401 (.030 over), Edelbrock clone 1406 4 bbl carb, 727 auto, Selec-trac NP229, AMC 20 REAR - D44 FRONT - WT - 3.31 ratio, 4" high arc spring lift.
Rolling project currently licensed, insured, and driving. No problem running with traffic on the interstate, as I was building the truck primarily as a tow vehicle, for highway driving (95%) hauling gear with camper behind. The truck is safe, solid, and capable. Engine, transmission, axles, steering, all run smooth. Brakes, brake lines, hardware, have all been refreshed, repaired and work perfectly. New set (x4) 235/75R/15 LT tires with less than 1k miles.
EXTERIOR –
Paint in fair shape with only clearcoat flaking off, minor body dings has metal still intact not torn, with surface rust only. Respray at some time in its life, with same Champagne Metallic color, the truck came with from the factory. Minimal body work would be needed for full restoration. Interior paint, under rotted original carpet I removed, looked like truck just rolled off the factory line. All floor pans, seams, wheel wells, are intact with NO rust through anywhere on the body or frame of the truck. For a build project, the truck is in great condition, and ready for your vision.
All chrome trim is intact, and relatively good condition.
Wagon wheel, white, 8” wide rim spare is mounted under rear of the truck, in OEM position, is used and holds air. I intended to replace it with a matching OEM rim & tire, but not that far yet.
I have a full set of center caps that will go with the truck.
No wood grain trim on the truck. Evidence around the rear glass key switch the wood grain was on it, and tailgate looks like it might have residue from it, but must have been removed before a respray at some time. Paint is smooth, as trim borders at that time went from the rivets, to double stick tape application.
All glass is good, all windows work, all electric window switches work. Rear glass motor & tailgate key switch has been gone through, and window works like new with front dash switch or tailgate switch. Most window wipes/seals have been replaced, with exception front wing window seals. Both wings are functional and latch as they should. New flex traks already installed in front doors, and I have the two new ones for rear passenger doors, when needed.
Doors all work good, could use new seals.
LIGHTS-
All working. Replaced front blinker assemblies, all four corner marker light assemblies, with new bases & bulbs. Still have originals I took off that can go with the truck.
New adjusters installed on headlight buckets, as old ones were failing.
REAR OF TRUCK-
2” Class IV Receiver Hitch, currently 6 pole round connector, have new 7 pole RV connector I was going to splice in, that will go with the truck.
BUMPERS-
OEM aluminum bumpers front & rear, in good condition.
ACCESSORIES-
Two separate antennae mounts on the truck. One in center of cab above front seats, for small single antennae, possibly Motorola type mobile unit. Second larger ball swivel mount on left rear corner for wand or whip type. Cabling existing in the truck, and ready for connection.
Rear wind deflector with mounting hardware. Truck did not come with this, but it came with the truck, and will go with the truck. You can mount it, or not.
INTERIOR -
Original electric seats still in the truck, front buckets, arm rest, rear bench, as expected need recovered. Front driver seat has the typical Jeep broken frame on lower right side, but still intact and truck can be driven as is. New seats were on the agenda, just not there yet. Pulled out electric driven bases, went through the drive cables, seat motors need cleaning/re-greased. They work but slow.
Headliner was toasted, so removed and ceiling waiting to be redone. I intended to do a 6”x1/4” Pine T&G headliner, cargo sides and floor of cargo area, but now yours to choose what to do with it. Sun visors are essentially trashed and need replaced.
Cargo area currently has original leveling platform in place, with a recycled rubber truck bed mat to protect cargo area and platform. I have the original cargo curtain, cargo area side panels, that will go with the truck. I pulled out old carpet, and have all the chrome trim pieces with screws, for the floor & tailgate, that will go with the truck.
Dash - Heater fan controls all work, fan motor works, all gauge’s work. AMP meter has been updated to a VOLT gauge, so fire risk averted. Dash pad is cracked, a little rough, but in place. Odometer not working, but is within 200 miles actual since I got the truck. Recently stopped, and have not driven the truck much since then. Dash lights all working.
Under dash AC unit does not function at all, is intact, and can be refurbished. York compressor on engine was working ok, with good clutch, but never engaged. AC lines are there but in poor condition.
Adjusted glove box, ashtray, for function, glove box insert missing.
Vacuum shift 4x4 switch pulled out and checked. Works perfectly, but vacuum lines for 4x4 system aged and need replaced.
AM/FM/Cassette player radio in dash, works, but speakers need replaced. All are still in place in the truck.
Digital clock in dash works. I have a second matching ash tray that goes with the truck, as I was going to replace the clock, with a passenger side ash tray in the dash.
Electric door locks function, but poorly. I have new tension springs for the locks, but actuators will need worked through, to regain full function of the locks.
Interior lights all work.
ENGINE-
Truck has verified 1972 dated 401 engine (bored .030 over), recent upgrade from OEM 2 bbl MC2150 carb/OEM cast intake to 4 bbl Edelbrock clone carb (Dokili) w/aluminum AMC Performer 4 bbl intake model 2131. Good power, starts & runs smooth, no issues with engine leaks. Currently using Rotella 15-40W oil. Wiring is a little crazy right now, but all connections good with all systems working, just needs tidy’d up and loomed.
TRANSMISSION-
727 3 speed, was replaced by PO at some point, and have original 727 transmission case that goes with the truck. Could be rebuilt, and have original transmission back in the truck. Fresh oil/filter after full flush. When truck came home to us, topped off trans fluid, then put 15oz bottle of Berrymans B12 in with it. Ran for about a month test driving, while working on the truck, to clean out innards from sitting. Transmission shifts smooth, no slipping, no leaks.
TRANSFER CASE-
NP229 is smooth, with no apparent issues. Have yet to check for full function, as vacuum lines need replaced, and getting things worked on for mostly highway driving.
AXLES-
Front D44 is smooth, wheel bearing play checked, hubs in good shape, and new disc brake pads. Greased up all zerks on axle, pulled front cardan shaft greased all needle zerks, then re-installed shaft. No issues.
Rear AMC20 stock with single piece shafts. No whine on the road, just a little play when shifting from reverse to drive, probably original innards. Still a lot of miles left in it.
STEERING-
Smooth response on pump. Return line could use replacement, steering box could use a new gasket set, as it has slow leak from top cover. Steering wheel needs re-clocked, as horn would honk when turning right, into my driveway. Disconnected horns in front grill, until I got to this. No slack in the wheel, front steering parts in good condition, and greased.
New Monroe regular duty steering damper.
FUEL SYSTEM-
First thing done when truck came home, dropped the tank. Cleaned, flushed, new vents, flushed lines, pressure checked, replaced all rubber hose connections including fill/vent hoses. Refurbished original sending unit, checked function, and works good. Checked for rust on frame behind tank, and only surface rust found. Cleaned skid plate and reinstalled. Return line is connected and working.
Installed new carburetor rated low pressure (4-7 lbs) electric fuel pump on frame, in place of existing that was not working. Removed mechanical fuel pump from engine, that was disconnected, and installed block off plate. Currently have temporary rubber fuel lines from frame to carb, with OEM bypass fuel filter being used.
To wrap up……
I have had a lot of fun with this truck, working on it to bring it back from the brink of death, and shared a lot of hours with friends & family working on it or just telling stories with them. It will be missed at our home, but life has a way of showing us another path at times, and I have another direction I need to go right now. I have been in this truck deep, have complete faith it will be a solid project for someone else now, that will enjoy it for many years in the future with their family & friends.
Thanks
Asking $12,500 – comes with loose original parts I saved, some extra parts it came with to me, and others since I have had it here that I will pass along

GLWTS! If you don’t get much traction on the listing you could list on BAT - bring a trailer. You’ve done a lot of work to it and your detailed ad is excellent.

Thanks, and have it posted across 5 different forums, but no bites at all. Really hoping cooler weather gets here first, as I love working/driving the truck, and have big plans for the future travels. Just in a spot with finances, as got laid off last year along with about 200 others, when a contract was not renewed at the company I was with. Went on SS, but not enough to stretch, so either need to switch to a completely different job or liquidate what I can. Rather work, there again could lose benefits my wife needs for medical, so right now stuck in the middle just riding the wave and see how it turns out.

Sorry to hear about the downturn. I feel that. My wife is getting laid off next month (company is closing the lab in our town due to high cost of rent and downturn in business) but we should be ok for a while.

The only constant is change. Hopefully an upswing is just around the next corner.
