'82 258 J10 electric fuel pump conversion?

Post by AMCer »

Can anyone point me to information about converting my J10 (1982 258) to an electric fuel pump?

My problem: If the Jeep sits more than a few hours, the gas seems to run back into the tank and it's hard to start without pumping. When it sits for a long time, it's nearly impossible to start without a shot of starter fluid.

I'd like to just bypass the mechanical fuel pump and install and electric one that will refill the lines and carb as soon as I turn on the key.

Q1) I know I can use an inline pump but, does anyone make an in-tank one compatible with the J10 tanks?

Q2) Those of you who have done this, which pump did you use?

Q3) Anyone have instructions or a web page showing how you did this?

I did one on my Wagoneer before it got swapped. I'll see if I can find my write up.

Looks like those old pump links are dead.

You need this pump with the pickup screen

I have used the carter as well, such as the 4070, they come in different flavors, not too sure about the 258 psi min and max psi and flow rate.

Here is the carter, not a pusher but below tank level

some have said that the carter quality has gone bad...

I also used the easy to install edelbrock 17301 which is fitted with the 5/16" fittings, the carter has 3/8" barb, so you need to get different fittings, the edelbrock

not installed as pusher but puller... it works

I used an inline pump from airtex with a low psi output so I didn't need a regulator. My situation involved a 4.0 block though, so there was no mech. option anyway. Are you planning on running all new fuel lines? My guess is there is air leaking into the lines somewhere either at the the tank connection, the mech. pump itself, or somewhere in the lines - causing the fuel to drain back since the vacuum in the line gets lost. So if you ran the fuel through the existing system, you'll still probably have a problem - if that's what it is.
I know you said you'd rather do an in-tank pump, but I can find that part number for mine if you want.
