AC stopped working

Post by ejeffrjr »

I have a 1987 Grand wagoneer. 360 Engine. The air conditioning has stopped working.
- Clutch engages
- Compressor and hose are cold.
- Added coolant (gauge reds slightly overfilled, is that a problem?)
- Dash controller: No noise and blower doesn't run (blower works normally with heater. Vents seem to work for heat and defrost)
Could this be a vacuum issue? Is there somewhere in the engine compartment I could check before pulling the dashboard apart?
Should I purge the coolant and refill? Where is the high side port and can I bleed some pressure off from there?

overcharging is an issue , i dont understand the guage your using, but you should use a 2 guage system to check presssures on the high and low side of the system this will help you better determine issues, you can rent these at auto zone cost is 0 sans the deposit fee

Without going into great detail what was suggested above is valid, you need a set of guages.
Concerning no AC blower you need to remove the control head, there are 2 blower switch's one for heater other for AC, could have a defective blower switch or micro switch (i think) on the control head lever (when moved to AC) since the heater blower works there is power to the control,
Other possibility is the AC blower itself is bad or maybe not grounded, you will know when checking the blower switch if power is at the switch, next if you have power at the switch need to drop the evaporator to check for voltage at the motor, keep in mind may not have 12 volts depending on what position the blower switch is in ,low, med or hi.

Thank you for your help. It turned out to be a loose wire. One wiggle and fixed. That's a big relief!
