1972 j 4800 water pump problems

Post by Ruby1972j4800 »

Hello People!
Has anyone had any trouble with finding a correct waterpump for their jeep? Every waterpump i have purchased had a 3/8 longer pulley shaft. Has anyone encountered this? I have tried ordering a new pulley with that has a longer offset but none seem to line up right with any belts. Do i need to order new pulleys for everything else? I am in the process of rebuilding my first build, and this is hanging me up. Its a 1972 J4800 camper special with a 360 v8

'68-72 uses a different water pump from later years. The aftermarket listings are rife with errors, like this one.

Covered in previous threads if you'd search, both here and in the AMC car forums. We had a thread about this topic exactly two months ago: viewtopic.php?p=228676#p228676

did you try a buick 350 watepump? or do you have a different powerplant amc360 as i thought those were the engine of choice pre amc. in those model years, could be wrong.

Mmm, a 350 seems extraordinarily unlikely if this Jeep is actually a '72. I recall that '71s that could have the 350, but not '72s. If this Jeep has a VIN starting with J2, it's unquestionably a '72.

Plus the OP describes the problem as the wrong hub height, which points to the '68-72 AMC water pump difference.

I just replaced mine with the correct pump. I ordered it through American Parts Depot but these guys said they only had more more in stock:

Get it while you still can! I have a feeling these might become unicorns.
