Does oil come through the rocker arms to lubricate the valve tips? That's a typical design. The FSM should have a diagram of how the oil is plumbed.

Look near figure 27 here - https://jubileejeeps.org/327/new_rambler_v8.htm - this describes the oil path. Looking at the engine while reading this text might be more explanatory than the text on its own. It appears that oil runs down the rocker arms to the valve tips.

I recall this rocker shaft design tends to clog on the early 232s. The non-detergent oils of the era must have contributed to this problem. The hollow rocker shafts with drilled bolts are typical of the engine design from the era, from what I've seen.

Yes. The oil comes up to the rocker shaft through a drilled bolt.

I cleaned it out as best I could without complete disassembly, so we will see how that helps.

I added a 1/2 pint of ATF to this oil change, so hopefully this will clear any hidden sludge out during operation.

Well, got it back together.

No surprise, i've still got a slight tick, but it's back to running.

At this point, I'm just going to take it for what it is.... A dog.

Maybe one day I'll have the resources to do a proper rebuild.

Until then, I plan to leave it be and enjoy it.
