Message not sending

I sent a PM a week ago but it appears to be stuck in the outbox.
Just tried to send three PMs but none show up after I hit the submit button - not in sent or outbox.
Obviously user error because I have successfully sent PMs in the past.

After much frustration I saw this thread in the Site section. viewtopic.php?t=23189

Essentially outbox is sent and sent is read. Totally different from the way MS Outlook works. Too confusing for me even though I have an MS in IT.
