J10 Roll Bar

Post by thej10guy »

Hey everybody. I have a j10 townside roll bar that I am going to be selling soon. I will post this in the parts for sale page but I don’t want to yet because I don’t know how much I should ask for it? Does anyone know how much they are worth? I have looked on here and on IFSJA to figure out what people have sold there’s for, as well as looked on google and ebay for ones listed but came up empty on all accounts. Has anyone sold them and if so for how much?Image
I have both pieces for it, and they are both in good condition…just some surface rust mostly.

Here is the other part. We had to torch the bolts out but the mount part is still intact. If it was sandblasted and painted/powder coated you’d never see anything wrong with it. You could bolt it is as is too, but I wouldn’t put it in a show truck. It’d look good in an original or patina’d truck.

Looks like a wire wheel and top coat semi gloss black POR-15'll make it look like a show piece to me...

No idea on price sorry.

There are 2 major differences between new Wranglers and FSJs. FSJs are meant to be both utilitarian and capable, not just capable. FSJs are also rarely initially recognized as Jeeps by the average American.

I'd guess they were about $150-200 new. Half-new for used is a good rule of thumb. I expect it will depend on someone near you wanting it, considering the size and weight.

As a WAG. Sorry if that's disappointing.

Local shops can make something like that rather easily. There are guys in my area that make roll bars/cages and sliders and such as a side business.

I'm not going to say it's not easy to build one, but a) why would you when you could buy a stock one, and b) if that drives the price down, why are the factory grille guards worth so much? They're not really that special from a fabrication perspective.

I expect you could have a factory grille guard made locally if you had a sample to work from. Pretty sure the development work - lacking a sample - would be the most expensive part.

I believe the larger hoop of this bar sit on top of the bed rails, and the narrow hoop sits on the bed floor. If you really wanted a roll bar and lived within driving distance of the OP, I'd think definitely it would worthwhile to go and get it, even at a higher cost than I suggested. Kinda neat that it's "Jeep Approved Special Equipment." If you had to ship, well, I expect it would not be worth it. It's not a complicated construction for a shop that's set up to bend tubing. Even driving your pickup 500 miles to get it will cost you at least $100 in fuel, likely $200 if you drive a J-truck. Maybe you could find an affordable way to get it to you.

Didn't Jeep have a special package and graphics that came with this roll bar? The top bar has light mounts that would give your Jeep that Baja racer look many wanted back in the day.

But thej10guy just bought a Ford flareside bed for his truck--and is modifying the frame to use it. It would be a PITA to get a stock bed back on when he's done, and if he wanted to use it on the bed he put in, he's have to modify it to the point that he might as well build a new one.

The truck's a Honcho--Idk if that means it got the bar automatically or not, but it definitely made it more likely from what I can tell. I'm sure if I had the TSM for the '80s trucks it would tell me 😉.

I don't get the context of your first part.

There are '80s TSMs on the Tom COllins site. Maybe you are thinking of the parts book? My '74-80 parts book includes the Special Equipment catalog, but I think the available '80s parts books (also on that site) do not. Seems likely the place to look is sales brochures, which may give a list of included equipment for the special packages.

I payed $150 for one 18 years ago (better condition paint).

I would be highly surprised if its somehow worth less than that now. Saying something is worth half of what it cost new is an ok thing to say if its not something that was built 45 years ago. The dollar was worth a vastly different amount back then.

The harder thing is finding somebody that wants one within driving distance. Because its a tough thing to ship. Not impossible, just a hassle. So it may take a while to sell.

But really, even if you had to give it away, that's certainly better than sending it to a scrap yard. Its not like they are overly common.

Regarding the half-new rule, that's what the Jeep dealer I worked at would price used parts back in the '70s. It's a rule they picked so that they did not have a negotiation every time they sold a used part. They had a lot of partial or wrecked vehicles that covering many years. The rule was much cheaper than new, but not free. For me, it's just a convenient place to start with a realistic number.

With something like this, I expect the longer you can wait for a buyer, the more you will get. Limited demand, combined with size/weight and distance.

I would think for someone that wants to have a Jeep RollBar, you could definitely get about $350+ easily for that.
