Help Identifying Paint Color - Avocado Mist?

Post by kjandb »

I need to paint my primered panel but I'm having a hard time identifying my color. The only tag I have was pretty chewed up and doesn't match any paint codes for my year. It's a '71 and I've learned that most of the specs aren't accurate, and I have to go to the '72 (transition year from Kaiser).

Any paint pros who can help me out?

Where are you getting your information? You listing for '71 and '72 show the same Ditzler code for each - same color. The Ditzler (or PPG or whatever) code is a specific mix of base and pigments. The '62-73 parts book lists the Wagoneer colors for '71 and '72 separately, but both years have the same color and code for Avocado Mist, 431. You can read this info on pages Ge-15 and 16. https://oljeep.com/edge_parts_man.html

Normally your paint and trim tag would be stamped with two three-digit numbers, one in each empty field. Neither 213 or 494 are valid numbers for any year '62-73 according to the book.

The Ditzler codes are there. Many auto paint stores can make spray cans from the codes. You could buy a sample can and test the match. Won't be exact since the pigments have faded. Try the inside of the door or similar. Or just call it Avocado Mist and have the paint store match some hidden interior panel.

You're right, it looks like the '71 and '72 have the same codes for Avocado (431) - it's '70 that has something different. I'll stick with ditzler 44115 and see how it looks. Paintref has a bunch of different greens that aren't listed in the parts book - Beachwood, Spring Green, Mint - but those colors don't look like a match.

My tag is still a mystery.
