Is this the solenoid? The connector just behind the AC compressor has the ring ground wire

Think so. This is the one on my '82:

I've repaired the wiring (red wire and black heat shrink) but the ground wire with the ring terminal is original. That's where it attaches - the plumbing won't change from what you see here. I connected it properly and it actually works!

What is this and where do I get a new one? Is this my ECU? On my continued journey to figure out this problem I opened this box and the resistors fried are D18, D19, and D21. Back to the wiring diagrams...

Not your ECU. Was it connected? Looks like the controller for the idle jet stepper motor on a 258, but you have a V8. Suggest you page through your wiring diagrams and look for it. It will be covered in the TSM if it's supposed to be there.

Cruise control module? SJ11.

D18, D19, D21 are almost certainly diodes, not resistors.

Interesting. I like your setup better! 2 wires quick and easy. Jealous yours works!

Could be cruise control but weird to see since I've never used it. The wire connector looks like this:

Turns out it is the cruise control module. If I don't have to start the car with that, it's low on my priorities list to replace.

I did however (probably dumb but turns out it didn't cook anything more) plug that module back in (took the inline cruise control fuse out), hook the battery back up and try to fire up the car. Everything works through all key positions until I actually try to run. Click then everything goes dead like there's no battery. Take the terminal off the battery and wait a bit to try again. Same thing. Battery reads at 12.6V. Not testing more wires tonight.
